Despite being the undisputed television leader for Wednesday nights in Spring 2018, Survivor ratings for Ghost Island episode 6 have been passed by another.
When Millennials vs. Gen X was first announced, I initially cringed. I thought the idea of older players versus younger players would get played out and stereotypical, and to my benefit, tribes drove the differences of eras home for the first few episodes. After things got settled, the great characters and game players took over. The same thing has happened with Survivor Ghost Island, as we’re past the second swap and now players aren’t even sent there each week!
That breaking of tradition will help continue to keep the show performing well on television, although there is a show to surpass its success once more. The Wednesday night final Nielsen television ratings are in, and Survivor was not the highest-rated television program on Wednesday night for the first time this season. With the return of FOX’s Empire brought the corporation a 2.0/8 ratings/share split in the 18-49 adult demographic in the US. That was fairly better than Survivor Ghost Island‘s 1.7/7 ratings, although the latter won the night in viewers (8.15 million).
Empire has always competed with Survivor for ratings supremacy on Wednesday nights, but there are mitigating factors involved. Primarily, it was the mid-season return for that show, offering the highest ratings since its September debut. With such a long layoff between episodes, more people tune in.
That’s not to say Survivor is slouching, nor is it at risk of cancellation. On the contrary; CBS is currently on location in Fiji set to film Survivor season 37, as executive producer Matt Van Wagenen proved on Twitter earlier this week. It’s likely that we’ll even get up to season 42 if bookings in Fiji’s island resorts are to be believed.

The most remarkable thing, week in and week out, is that a decades-old reality competition show absolutely blows out the majority of its Wednesday night rivals … decades later!
