Although we have to wait four months until season 39, the new season of Survivor: South Africa is here and is among the best international versions of the show.

After a shaky but exciting season 38, Survivor is now entering its long offseason. However, there are plenty of international and fan-made versions to keep us busy, some good, some not so good. But if you are craving a show similar to US Survivor, look no further than South Africa!

The seventh season of Survivor: South Africa actually begins today. Similar to the American iteration we know and love, castaways will compete over 39 days to become the Sole Survivor. In this season there will be 21 castaways. The production value, twists, and level of gameplay are right on par as well. Nico Panagio also does a superb job of hosting without coming off as a Jeff Probst impersonator.

What’s interesting about this season is how similar its theme is to the next US season. “Island of Secrets” and “Island of the Idols” both imply an Exile type of twist that presents an opportunity for castaways to benefit from advantages and Hidden Immunity Idols. Here’s a look at the promo for South Africa: Island of Secrets.

Although the first five seasons of South Africa have been hit or miss, they really stepped it up for season six: Philippines, producing a thrilling season even by US standards. If you haven’t checked out South Africa: Philippines, I highly recommend it. I was surprised by how similar it felt to the US version.

The tricky part for Americans and Canadians is figuring out how to find it online! A good route to take is to follow the Survivor Reddit community, as they regularly offer good tips on where and how to watch international versions of the show.
