4. – “We never received a tape back.”

The saddest moment from season one came during the first-ever loved ones episode. Now the loved ones are typically flown in and either compete in a challenge or watch their Survivors compete in one. Back in the day, however, the contestants got to watch what their loved ones were up to on video (remember VCRs?).

Well, in season one, it was all smiles and laughter with a few tears as the remaining contestants watched their loved ones come across the screen and update them on what was going on. Then, the mood changed.

Jeff Probst turned to Jenna Lewis and said, “Well, Jenna, it breaks my heart to say this, but we never received a tape back.” To which Jenna started to tear up, and the rest of the castaways were left speechless.

For those who don’t remember, Jenna had two young daughters that she had left at home, so of course, that would be heartbreaking. She didn’t get to hear from her two kids while everyone else got to see what their families were up to.

While that was painful enough, Jenna still competed in the reward challenge and lost. While everyone was watching Greg’s video from his sister (which was a very odd home video considering they were brother and sister), Jenna hung out by herself shooting the bow and arrow onto the target.

It was the first genuinely heartbreaking moment in Survivor history, and we all felt for Jenna at that moment. Nearly two decades later, it’s still tough to watch.
