Survivor: Comparing Borneo origins to the current seasons
Challenge dynamics
Speaking of challenges, they were much more straightforward in season 1. The first one ever in the show’s history consisted of everyone holding onto a raft, carrying it into the ocean, and making sure every torch on the way back to the beach was lit.
There was another challenge where the contestants had to build a stretcher to transport their smallest member through the jungle. Oh, and who could forget the Blair Witch challenge (2000 was a crazy year, man) where Rudy answered “I don’t know” for everything?
Challenges in the current seasons usually consist of swimming through the ocean in some sort of relay and then concludes with doing a puzzle. Puzzles have become a staple in challenges in the present editions of the series. No more do we see simple the S.O.S. or Q&A competitions that used to be so enjoyable in the earlier seasons.
While challenges are still a crucial part of Survivor, they’re not nearly as creative or compelling as the older seasons. The rewards are almost always for food too, which wasn’t the cast in season one.
