Worst Twists in Survivor History – Number 12: Dividing Tribes by Ethnicity

  • First Appearance: Cook Islands (Season 13, 2006)

Survivor made waves in 2006 when it decided to split the contestants up by ethnicity in their 13th season. Could you imagine if they attempted to do this now? That would not be a good idea and the show would be under a lot of scrutiny for dividing tribes that way.

The twist was a controversial one and it was rumored that production was planning to do the same thing the very next season in Survivor: Fiji, but couldn’t due to a player backing out at literally the final second, forcing them to roll with 19 contestants.

While splitting tribes up by race probably seemed like an interesting idea, it didn’t need to be something that was attempted. The only thing that was really good about it was that it did inspire the show to cast more diverse people rather than having a mostly white cast.

The ethnic tribes only lasted three episodes before the four tribes became were split into two tribes, so at least it was a short-lived controversial twist.

Fortunately, production has not attempted to split tribes by ethnicities again. Let’s keep it that way.
