You have to give Danny “Kilby” Kilby his due; he is making a big splash on Survivor 51. He became a focal point during episode 5, but it may not help him down the road in the game.
During the tribe swap in episode 4, Kilby and Lewis Kelly were the only former Toka members on the new Dina tribe. While Lewis dealt with a stomach issue, Kilby was making friends with Eric Macksoud, a kindred spirit. He also made other connections with other members, but his quickly-formed friendship worried others in the Dina tribe.
This continued throughout episode 5. Lewis felt better and was trying to earn his way into the good graces of his new tribe, but his self-imposed isolation from Dina on the first day after the swap left him as the odd man out.
The immunity challenge led to only one winner, and both of the losing tribes had to go to Tribal Council. However, as part of the reward for the winning team, Toka got to send one player to another tribe. There wasn't much info given to the players before one was chosen. After a rock draw, Maggie Nestor was sent. This made Brady Booker nervous.
Maggie had directed Brady to where an advantage was earlier in the season when Carter Krull visited their camp. Brady found the extra vote advantage with Maggie's help but gave it to her at her insistence. Brady still considered it to be his and pressed Maggie to play it for the two of them. He was worried she'd play it on her own, and that is precisely what she did.
When Maggie got on the boat to go to visit another tribe, she was given a second extra vote advantage and was directed to give it to one person on either of the other two tribes. She chose to go to Dina because she knew two original Toka members were in the minority there.
Once on the Dina beach, Maggie corrals Lewis and Kilby. Kilby tells them both that Lewis is the one on the chopping block, so Maggie gives each of the men one of her extra votes. This, in theory, would even up the tribe's votes, but she made them use it to protect each other and that they had to vote for Linnea Capobianco. The men agreed.
At Tribal Council, Kilby easily could have ingrained himself with the former Savu members by voting with them to take out Lewis, but he didn't. Kilby stuck to his word. The vote came out deadlocked for Lewis and Linnea. On the re-vote, nobody budged, and Kilby made it clear he was ready to go to rocks and take his chances to keep his word. Eric, Sharonda Cox, and Cristian Chavez were not willing to do that for Linnea, and they sent her home.
Will this big move cost Kilby his game down the road on Survivor 51?
If the tribes remain the same, and Dina goes to Tribal Council in episode 6, Kilby will surely be gone. He and Lewis are still in the minority, and he's burned his bridges with them. He could explain what happened with Maggie, but still, he made the immediate play to show his loyalty to his old tribe.
If a merge happens before Dina goes back to Tribal Council, Kilby will have earned points with his former Toka members by maintaining his word and tribal loyalties. Maggie in particular should be an ally, but she now has problems of her own. Brady was visibly upset when Maggie told everyone back at Toka what she did. Brady wanted that advantage for himself, even though it benefited the Toka tribe immensely. It had been a brave move on Maggie's part, and it showed she was thinking long-term. And it worked.
However, any number of things could have derailed that plan, and it might not have been a great short-term move. Time will tell, but Maggie is now at the top of Brady's hit list, and he is an emotional player.
As the season plays out, we'll see if Kilby sticking to his word works out. He, too, was thinking long-term. It will be interesting to see if both he and Maggie make it to the merge.
