The start of a new adventure

The season officially begins with Jeff Probst arriving on the marooning ship with the 21 new season castaways, sharing the same speech he started Survivor: Borneo with. And as he says "go!" the players descend into chaos as they work together to remove everything from the ship, tossing it into the ocean.

Already, though they don't have buffs or know which tribe they're on, they immediately start working together to ensure they get the best resources off of the boat. And when Jeff starts the countdown, everyone starts leaping into the ocean. Officially off to the races—and the island.

And players are confused as they take everything back to the shore, wondering if this is a classic season of Survivor with an original-style marooning. But while some of them are barely staying alive as they swim to shore, others are already bonding and getting to know each other already. And after a few minutes of meet-and-greet networking, Aaliyah Puglia notices a placard and everyone rushes over to it.

Cristian Chavez reveals it says that twenty of them have to immediately vote someone out of the group to go to the other side of the island. They ask for a volunteer and no one says anything. Until Lewis Kelly volunteers to leave the tribe behind—with no objections from anyone else. They give him a fun send-off, assuming he's going on a journey.

Early connections being made

Right off the bat, Rob Antonson and Eric Macksoud bond over both being from Rhode Island, whispering to each other that no one else needs to know they share the connection. And after that, Angelica "Jelly" Loblack and Ori Jean-Charles discover a mutual love of lasagna (that Jelly is hoping gets her "wifed up").

But as Devin Way and Aaliyah begin walking the beach, they noticed Jelly and Ori behind them and give each other a look of alignment. Right then, a chopper comes in and throws a bag into the ocean.

Devin turns to the other three and nods, confirming them as allies—along with Sharonda Cox—before they get divided into tribes.

Tribe Division

Toka (Yellow): Mike Pinsky, Devin Way, Angelica "Jelly" Loblack, Jenna Doore, Danny "Kilby" Kilby, Maggie Nestor, Aaliyah Puglia, Patt Cannaday, Cristian Chavez, Brady Booker

Savu (Purple): Kristin Flickinger, Rob Antonson, Eric Macksoud, Alexis Levine, Ana Sani, An "Thien An" Nguyen, Carter Krull, Linnea Capobianco, Ori Jean-Charles, Sharonda Cox

Kilby and Kristin are nominated by their tribe to negotiate the supplies that were secured off of the marooning ship for each of their tribes. Supplies are organized into categories: building supplies, flint/pot/machete, shelter supplies, and fishing gear.

They decide to compete in a self-induced game of chance, which they decide is a thumb war. Kristin immediately annihilates him and secures the fishing supplies over the shelter supplies. Kristin secures the flint, pot, and machete as well as the fishing gear while Kilby walks away with the building and shelter supplies.

Immediately at the Toka tribe, everyone starts bonding and Devin gets a weird feeling from Jenna, who is withholding something personal during their introductions.

He goes off with Aaliayh to realign about their alliance, which Jelly also notes inher confessional, calling it the "Helicopter Alliance." Meanwhile, Ori and Sharonda are connecting over on the Savu tribe, deciding to make their alliance about connecting with other people and not coming off as each others' no. 1's.

Ana uses her voice actor skills to categorize everyone into different types of people to figure out how she can connect with them. But Eric, also using voices—just publicly instead of via confessional—is starting to irk some people, including his previous Rhode Island connection in Rob.

Exile Island is back

Lewis makes his way across the island to discover he's ended up on Exile Island, forced to stay on the desolate beach. To keep in the theme of the season, Exile Island is decorated with a whale skeleton.

On Day 2 at Exile Island, Lewis is going stir crazy when Jeff shows up with a duffel bag. He sits down and talks to him, letting him know it's been about 30 hours that he's been sitting here alone.

He tells Lewis that he's not leaving Exile Island today, but that he also won't be competing in the challenge which means he won't be going to Tribal Council and he won't be the first voted out, which excites him.

Jeff says he wants to give him a chance to get an idol, but he has to earn it. Of course, Lewis says he's been looking for an idol, but he hasn't found one...so Jeff shows him where to get it.

He walks them over to a large mast planted deep in the group where an idol is planted at the top. He can't climb it, he can't push it over, so Jeff hands him and axe and tells him to start chopping, planting down an hourglass to start his limited time.

After chopping so hard—for an hour—that he gets blisters bursting open on his hands and causing him to vomit, he doesn't make it in time and doesn't earn his advantage.

Back at camp...

Back at Toka, Devin is teaching everyone how to do acrobatics that could help them in challenges. Thien An definitely spots Devin as trying to step up as a leader, super charismatic but someone who could be strategizing hard underneath.

And when Brady connects with Devin, he decides to enlist him as his "big dumb boy," before going around to the entire tribe and discussing how suss he thinks Jenna is—accusing her of not being a wedding photographer.

Over at Savu, Eric is fishing, but no one knows that, so they go off on an "Eric hunt" where Rob recruits Carter, who recruits Ana with the plan to take Eric out. But as they hear Eric screaming, thinking he's off in the jungle and found an idol, he actually caught a fish for them.

Eric breaks down, talking about his wife and how he's doing everything here for her. And even as everyone connects with him, Alexis makes it clear he's the odd-man-out and he's gonna be the first one to go from their tribe.

At Savu, Rob finds a hidden immunity idol, and he’s ecstatic not only to have found it, but also because it’s not a Beware advantage, and he doesn't have to climb Mount Everest to get an idol. You and all of us collectively thank the Survivor gods; it is a regular idol, Rob.

The Open Era is officially here

The first immunity challenge of the season is here, and with that, the tribes arrive at the challenge. The players are ecstatic to be there and see Jeff in person. They wonder where Lewis is when Jeff announces he has shocking news to share.

Jeff announces that this is the birth of a new game: the Open Era of Survivor, which means everything that has happened on Survivor and anything that has happened over the last 26 years is on the table. The castaways are surprised, slightly scared, probably nauseous, and anxious to find out more. As Jeff says, it is permanent uncertainty from now on.

Jeff tells them they will have agency in the type of game they play from now on, and that players will decide their fate in the upcoming twists. For instance, if all players vote unanimously right now, the Final Four fire-making challenge will be eliminated.

To my eternal shock, only 5 people want to get rid of the fire-making challenge, and Jeff is relieved to have his thinking corroborated. For giggles, Jeff throws out hypotheticals of getting rid of idols, twists, or advantages, which obviously no one votes to get rid of.

Jeff also announces that the Flip of the Coin from Survivor 50 is back on the table. If the person who flips the coin lands it, they're not only safe, but the prize pool increases to two million dollars. If they don’t, that person will leave the game, and the prize will carry forward into the next season, meaning whoever flips the coin in Survivor 52 will have the chance to increase the prize to three million dollars and so on, until the Coin Flip is successful. Let’s all hope it doesn’t and apply for Survivor 60 to become multi-millionaires, people!

The first immunity challenge of Survivor 51

Jeff shows the players the immunity idol for the season, which is a fantastic and powerful-looking whale, which is generally revered for their power, their strength, and their tenacity, which are all valuable traits for the eventual Sole Survivor. The players are pumped up and ready to compete for their safety.

The endurance challenge begins with both tribes rushing to outlast each other. Toka earns a slight lead at the start, especially as Eric struggles to untie knots. Brady almost injures his Achilles heel in trying to make up the difference once, especially as Aaliyah then struggles on her end of the challenge.

Savu starts catching up and is the first to build their staircase with the gigantic blocks. Christian and Ana then start working on the puzzle like they’ve been doing it for ages, leading to their first immunity win of the season and sending Toka to Tribal Council.

Brady, who is extremely competitive and doesn’t take losing well, at least sees a silver lining: most of the tribe was already zeroing in on Jenna, but it will take much more than simple hypotheticals to actually get rid of someone from Survivor.

Back at camp after the challenge

Maggie heads to the water well, nervous about being targeted for being older than the others. However, Jenna and Aaliyah are the main names being thrown around: the first for being a bit guarded against the others, and the second for falling behind on the challenge.

Jelly declares she doesn’t want a woman to go first. Jelly says most of the men on the tribe overpromised and undersold, and most of the women note that Brady was abrasive during the immunity challenge but won’t be targeted because of his strength at this point.

Patt admits that she doesn’t want Jenna to be eliminated and tells Jenna she is potentially the target, which immediately sends Jenna into a spiral. Jenna reveals in a confessional that she’s recently divorced, which is why she’s struggling to connect, but not because she's hiding something.

Jenna even starts rambling on and on about camera equipment just to prove her profession as a wedding photographer. To save herself, Jenna tells Brady that Aaliyah called him aggressive and intense, which makes Brady immediately want to eliminate Aaliyah then.

Brady and Devin are beefing because their personalities clash, and as they try to win over the other, Brady wants his numbers to target Aaliyah, while Devin wants his to vote Jenna out. Both men then start rallying their prospective factions to get their respective targets out.

The first Tribal Council of the season

The Toka tribe arrives at Tribal Council, and not only are they stunned by being there, but also by the set they are surrounded by, as it almost looks like the elephant cemetery from The Lion King but with whales. Jeff then welcomes them in and begins the first tribal of Survivor 51.

The sibling rivalry between Brady and Devin comes up as both see themselves as opposite sides of the same coin. Meanwhile, Jenna admits she didn't make a good first impression and knows she's in the hot seat. Others corroborate that Jenna may go home first, with Devin going all the way in by saying he sees Jenna as a massive threat down the line and publicly declares that he’s 100% writing her name down.

Patt brings up that Aaliyah is also in the hot seat due to her challenge performance, and Jeff is shocked by everyone's full-blown honesty. As Aaliyah tries to defend her case, a live council ensues, with most people standing up or having side conversations. After some back-and-forth, Jeff calls it one of the most memorable first tribal councils he’s ever been part of.

Before the votes are read, Jenna and Aaliyah stand up to play their Shots in the Dark. However, they’re both unlucky, as neither is given safety. Jeff then reads the votes, and after a 6-2 vote, he reveals that Aaliyah Puglia has become the first person eliminated from the season. While the tribe is still reeling from their first elimination, Jeff slightly perks them up by saying that once they return to their camp, their pot, flint, and machete are waiting for them.

So, that’s it for the Survivor 51 premiere episode. I personally highly enjoyed it, as it felt entirely different from the past 10 seasons we saw of the New Era. 51 felt like a good mix of the olden days while also keeping it updated to Survivor’s newest tricks. I have high hopes for the season after watching the episode and honestly can’t wait to watch more!
