Survivor 2017 year-end review: Thanks, plus what comes next

Before we cover anything and everything for Survivor 2018 coverage, let’s take a look back at the first year of Surviving Tribal’s coverage and what’s next.

Thank you, Survivor fans, for making Surviving Tribal’s first year of coverage go so smoothly. It was on February 1, 2017, that a trio of series fans from across the FanSided network came together to show our appreciation for the greatest reality, culminating in the ins and outs of Game Changers and Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers.

While 2017 may not have provided the greatest seasons on record, we did get to see some extreme highs and lows from the series. Sarah Lacina is a great, perhaps even underrated, winner of Survivor, showing just how well she tricked 19 other players to the point of convincing someone to give her a Secret Advantage while still voting them out of the game. We saw Chrissy evolve from someone huddled on their side vomiting on Day 3 to an Immunity champion, winning her record-tying fourth on Day 38.

On the other side of the coin, we saw Survivor at its lowest, in several facets. From a fairness perspective, we saw Cirie Fields eliminated without a single vote to her name and Ben Driebergen saved from a Final 4 elimination through a “secret” “advantage” given to Chrissy. We also saw one player attack another player in a transcendently awful manner, then use his airtime at the reunion to hawk their book about their problems surrounding it.

Just like the rest of 2017 in entertainment, politics, news stories and everything, Survivor had a few great moments overshadowed by a cloud of darkness. Thankfully, 2018 is just around the corner, giving us an opportunity to move forward and appreciate what comes next.

January 2017 Survivor Coverage Notes!

Later this week, I will be completing some of the final coverage of Survivor season 35, Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers. On Monday, I will start the year with the final edgic piece of the season, looking at the lessons we can all learn (especially me) about the finer things of the show’s winner edit process. Tuesday, I will be posting about five players from this season I hope we’ll see in future returnee seasons.

The rest of the week will focus on rounding out Survivor 2017 coverage by offering Surviving Tribal’s first-ever year-end awards! Honors for BIG MOVEZunderrated players, greatest moment, best Twitter follow, best character and more will be offered. As we approach the end of January (and closer to the official cast reveal of Ghost Island), I will be focusing on smaller, fun pieces, such as realistic casting for a Celebrity Survivor season (should we ever get one) and other lists.

As Survivor Ghost Island approaches, an opportunity to reset the clock and start anew begins! I want to personally thank Cody Williams and Cheryl Wassenaar for everything they taught me, challenged me on and opened my eyes to when it comes to coverage of our favorite reality show. Jacob Rausch swooped in this month to help save me, too, and I look forward to seeing his insight into Survivor in 2018.

We could always use more help, so we’re looking for new writers at Surviving Tribal! If you have enjoyed what we have done in 2017, apply now, and you may be part of our tribe next year! We’re hoping to approach more players for interviews, insights and features this year, but we can’t get it done without your help!
