Superfans don’t always separate feelings from the game
Survivor has been consistently lucky when it comes to their superfans on the jury phase. Most have rallied for players who play the game hard en route to the final Tribal Council, removing the ill effects from their possible blindside in favor of game respecting game. That’s the positive side of being a big fan of the game, but there are downsides, too.
Look no further than to Celebrity Big Brother! During this past season, Shannon Elizabeth was a fan of the show a clear step above even other superfans such as Ross Matthews and Omarosa. She won early competitions so handily she broke a word competition’s record that no player in any season has beat by finding letters for, and spelling, “responsibilities.”
She became such a threat that the entire house flipped on her, causing the superfan to ball up, cry, fall short of winning veto and voting against the player who orchestrated her blindside. More importantly, because she was established as the show’s biggest fan, she rallied the jury to her cause by convincing them to vote for who played the more honest game as opposed to the strongest, most controlling Celebrity Big Brother game.
It’s possible that the show’s biggest superfan this season soured the jury more than Ross Matthews did with his actions. Survivor Ghost Island will be fascinating to see, as this scenario could happen with so many superfans on the show.
