While there are certainly some hints at what’s to come in Survivor Ghost Island episode 5, the promo serves mostly to bring in newcomers and old fans.

As I mentioned in the latest piece about the Survivor ratings, it looks like Ghost Island is an early hit. The strong gameplay, a variety of different characters and personalities plus a bombastic premiere surrounding the lovably goofy play of Jacob Derwin has got the season off on a good foot, and CBS certainly wants to capitalize on what may be a great season ahead.

The Survivor Ghost Island episode 5 promo (one that will be airing on television as well as in YouTube video format) doesn’t follow in the path of its predecessors, especially considering how few content spoilers there are present within its 20-second format. No, this commercial reuses some footage seen in previous episodes, mixing in some confessionals that haven’t made it to air and offer small glimpses of next week’s episode; all while providing praising quotes from TV critics.

For example, we haven’t seen Desiree hunting in peoples’ bags before, making that a surprise of its own. We have seen Michael carry a big log on his back before, and Sebastian Noel certainly isn’t back on Malolo in the next episode (the tribes aren’t swapping based on provided footage). That means they’re taking some confessionals from earlier in the season to hype up Survivor Ghost Island.

We do get to see glimpses of the reward and immunity challenges; the latter involves retrieving objects tied to a pole on one end and the team pulling in a floatation device with the player holding on as if they’re catching waves in surfing. The former challenge looks to involve team-based hopping over and under obstacles before hitting three targets at an end station, looking fairly unique in its presentation (even if it’s familiar in practice).

Is Chris Noble’s mic drop moment about a big move he’s about to make in Tribal Council, or is CBS taking an old confessional to cap off a strong promo? We’ll have to wait until Survivor Ghost Island episode 5, “A Diamond in the Rough,” airs on March 21 at 8 p.m. ET to find out.
