Australian Survivor: Champions V Contenders sure looks like David vs. Goliath

It looks like CBS will get scooped by Network Ten, as Australian Survivor: Champions V Contenders beats them to David vs. Goliath punch.

Part of the social experiment that was the original season of Survivor was to look at people from all walks of life in a tribal setting to see who comes out on top. It showed that if the gay corporate trainer from Rhode Island can win the game in the year 2000, anybody could win. It has not always been a story of jocks vs. the pretty people; it’s often a story of David vs. Goliath.

The forced underdog storyline was something CBS was hoping to double down on in 2018, but it looks like their Australian subsidiary will beat them to their own game. Australian Survivor season 5 is called Champions V Contenders, and the parallels to Survivor: David vs. Goliath (announced last month) are more prevalent.

A promo was released on Twitter last night (Sunday morning in Australia), showing off some of the prominent “Champions” of the season. The premise is that everyday Australians will compete against the most heroic, athletic and dominant champions of the country, including the likes of a former Special Forces commando, an Aussie Rules Football player, a rugby player and an Olympic swimmer.

Less than a third of the season’s cast has been revealed, meaning there are still chances for Australian Survivor to pull a fast one and bring out a non-Australian, non-champion Russell Hantz to compete. With 12 contenders and 12 champions set to duke it out, some in Australia are directly comparing it to the biblical David vs. Goliath story.

The majority of US Survivor fans will never see an Australian season, even if it’s to their detriment. I’ve yet to go through one myself, as the seasons are long and have too many players. However, from what I’ve heard, the show is better than anything that’s been on TV stateside. It’s not that hard an accomplishment, but it’s still a huge endorsement!
