Survivor: David vs. Goliath episode 1 secret scene shows Goliath trouble
Power dynamics, plums wilting in the water and starting from scratch; the Survivor: David vs. Goliath episode 1 secret scene is now in.
Even with a 90-minute debut, you don’t capture everything that’s going on in three days within an episode of Survivor. More so than just the time constraint, the editors need to tell a story over 13 or 14 episodes, and sometimes things are left on the cutting room floor that clash with the season’s narrative. This is evidenced by the first secret scene of David vs. Goliath.
Usually, this video comes out after the West Coast airing of the episode, but keeping in line with the delayed preseason arc, it was released on Friday. Since we got a huge focus on the David tribe (for understandable reasons), this secret scene digs deeper into the dynamics of the Goliath tribe and how harsh this weather has been on a tribe that’s supposed to be set up for success.
The rain has been non-stop, and you can see it in the pruned, wrinkled hands of the Goliath players on Day 2. We even get a rare in-progress camp confessional, with Kara talking about the hardships of rebuilding a shelter that’s now in a worse state than it was the day prior.
The highlight is Mike White’s emergence as shelter leader, which he admits is a sign of bad times for the Goliath tribe if he’s the only one who read up how to build a shelter before showing up on Survivor. We get a few more glances of Natalie Cole looking around camp, Jeremy Crawford questioning everything that Mike is saying, and Alec giving a few smug smirks here and there.
It does fit into the vibe that the real episode gave us, but I understand why you would substitute this scene in order to get a “Mike’s a target” scene with Natalie becoming his buddy. Still, I wonder just how much the weather will become the talk of David vs. Goliath in future episodes.
