Normally, we get a two-hour-long episode at the premiere or shortly after (or at) the merge. Survivor: Edge of Extinction episode 5 will earn that honor first.

After the Survivor: Edge of Extinction premiere last week, I couldn’t help but clamor for a bit more. Players like Victoria, Julia and Chris barely got any introduction in favor of diving deeper dives into the returnees and the players on the bottom of Manu. That’s the problem with a one-hour premiere; there are too many stories to tell and not enough time to tell them.

After the premiere aired, Jeff Probst took to Twitter to ask if the fans want to see longer episodes air on television. Though it’s been in the works way before he reached out to the fans, it appears as though Survivor: Edge of Extinction episode 5 will see those asking for longer airtime have their wishes granted.

On Wednesday, March 20, CBS will air two hours of Survivor: Edge of Extinction action. Though the number of episodes remains to be seen, we should expect to see two players be voted out at Tribal Council based on the number of players in the game and the fact that we will need time to show at least one player earning their way back from the Edge of Extinction before the season ends.

Typically, Survivor doesn’t hold two-hour episodes this early into a season after the premiere. We’ve seen two-hour episodes in recent seasons such as Game ChangersHeroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers and Ghost Island at or after the merge, with HvHvH having its first two-hour episode coming at episode 10. It’s an odd positioning for an extra-long slate of the show at episode 5.
