The penultimate episode of Survivor: Edge of Extinction delivered in epic fashion, as Tribal Council theatrics were back once again.

For the second straight Tribal Council, Rick Devens stole the show and made a dramatic splash, this time to save Julie. Although he came up clutch in this episode, a few other castaways are deserving of considerable credit. Let’s take a deeper look into this week’s episode of Survivor by considering three key takeaways.
1) Rick gets an extra life
Similar to Ben Driebergen and Mike Holloway, Devens is one man up against an army. He’s clearly the biggest threat, and everyone knows that if he makes it to Day 39, the jury will award him the title of Sole Survivor.
Not only did he find an idol, but his Individual Immunity win means that he could hold onto it for another Tribal Council. What impressed me about Rick is that even though he has this extra life, he’s still working to form an alliance. With Julie and the returnee from the Edge of Extinction, Rick might be able to form a powerful trio.
2) Lauren makes her “winning” move
Coming into this episode, a key story to watch revolved around Lauren backing up her edit. Over the past few Wednesday nights, Lauren has received more attention from the cameras. That said, she didn’t really have anything substantial on her Survivor resume.
After Julie told Lauren about the plan to blindside Aurora, she realized that this was her chance to make a move. The original plan to vote out Julie didn’t serve Lauren as well. Over the past few episodes, they have formed a close duo.
If Lauren allowed Julie to receive the majority vote, Gavin and Victoria’s control over the game would grow considerably. As a result, Lauren persuaded Gavin to switch his vote to Aurora, and eventually, Victoria also got on board. Lauren is now sitting in a solid position to make it to the end, especially with an idol in her back pocket.
3) Julie goes from target to swing vote
This was probably the closest Julie has gotten to getting her torch snuffed. Based on the outcome at Tribal Council, she might not get this close again for the rest of the season. This Tribal Council opened up the door for Julie’s strategic game.
For one, she can decide to stick with Rick and align with the returnee from the Edge of Extinction for a vote or two. But don’t think Julie is naive. She knows how badly they have to take out Rick. Lauren wants to go to Final Tribal Council with Julie, so their close relationship gives Julie another option to make it to the end.
