Not content to admit they have gone overboard with the twists, Survivor: Island of the Idols centralizes the idols in one location this Fall.
Survivor: Edge of Extinction taught us that production has not learned from their mistakes and think that throwing surprise twists and advantages left, right and center makes for compelling television. Now that we have crowned a winner, CBS is prepping its fandom for even more craziness with perhaps their most advantage-forward theme.
As revealed during tonight’s Edge of Extinction finale reunion, the 39th season will be titled Survivor: Island of the Idols. You read that correctly; players will be participating in a season where they can expect to get the advice of two Survivor legends, Boston Rob Mariano and Sandra Diaz-Twine, who will be living on an island of their own and will not be active players.
Unlike the Edge of Extinction, when players are voted out, it appears as though will stay eliminated from the game. However, players will make their way to the island by various means and be treated to two iconic players treating this experience as a Survivor boot camp, offering mentorship to the players that arrive.
It harkens back to Game Changers where instead of being stuck on a desolate island and fending for herself, Exile Island became an advantage meeting of the minds between the recipient, Debbie Wanner, and the former Caramoan winner, John Cochran. It remained a secret until it aired on television, however, once people return from the Island of the Idols, we’ll see how long the secret can remain bottled up.
What do you think about Survivor: Island of the Idols, fans? Do you think this is an interesting way to incorporate past players without overshadowing the newbies too heavily, or has production finally (or continues to) jump the shark?
