One of the most entertaining players from Australian Survivor, Luke Toki is back in the 2019 edition of Champions vs. Contenders on the champs’ side.
Considering that one of the most popular formats for Australian Survivor was the Champions vs. Contenders season last year, it makes sense that they’re bringing the format back. The Aussies love their sports legends no matter the level of notoriety, and their physicality, strategic prowess and mental motivation necessary to become athletes help sell the competition.
However, as we saw last year with Russell Hantz, being an Australian Survivor champion might have to do with experience playing the game. As revealed on the show’s social media accounts, the self-proclaimed king is back. Luke Toki from the 2017 season is back on the Champions tribe in 2019.
If you’re unfamiliar with his season, Luke Toki’s US Survivor comparisons rival that of a more youthful, energetic, strategic but chaotic ball of energy that you would see in Tony Vlachos. He’s not nearly as “villainous” (for lack of a better word) as Tony was, but he does have an earned cockiness that comes from knowing and assessing situations and calling it as he sees it.
Just like Tony and, perhaps Malcolm Freberg, Luke can play in a commanding place in the game while not dropping his personality and playing meek. He’s the king of confessionals and, barring a Russell Hantz-like early departure, should be the voice of his Champions tribe (and subsequent tribes) as he narrates the goings-on from both his subjective and comedic perspective.
Who knows if there will be other returning players in this game or, in a twist of fate, Australian Survivor brings back just one of their former players. It’s hard to know for certain as the full cast hasn’t been released and certain castaways’ reveals have included accidental exit interviews. It’s hard not to be a little bit spoiled out there!
