Survivor: Africa, the show’s third season, took place in the fall of 2001. What were the most memorable moments from season three?

In the heyday of Survivor, the third season of the show took place in Africa in what to this day is arguably one of the toughest seasons in the show’s history. There was very little water available, scorching temperatures, dangerous wildlife, and grueling challenges that made this season so difficult for the 16 Americans vying for the title of Sole Survivor.

To be honest, I didn’t have great memories of this season. It premiered when I was ten years old, and I remember not enjoying it very much compared to the first two seasons. Perhaps it’s the fact that it’s 18 years later or that I appreciate the nostalgia of the older seasons now, but Survivor: Africa was much better this time around.

So, what were the most memorable moments from Survivor: Africa?

The elements

As mentioned above, the desert was brutal for the contestants. From the hot temperatures to the wildlife roaming around outside the tribe’s camp, Africa proved to be one of the toughest locations in series history.

One of the most significant moments from the show involving wildlife was when Ethan Zohn and Kim Powers were keeping watch while their tribe mates slept, a lion was roughly three feet away from their camp. Kim said on the reunion special that they could hear the lion breathing through the fence. How terrifying!

Whether or not production would have been able to do anything had the lion gotten into the campsite will never be known, but it sure was scary to watch on television!
