Brandon and Frank – BFFS?

What was so great about the early seasons of Survivor was how it stranded people from all different walks of life together in a confined area, forcing them to get along and work together. One of the best examples of this from season three was putting Brandon Quinton and Frank Garrison on the same tribe.

For those who don’t remember – Brandon was an openly gay man in his mid-20s and Frank was a conservative man who served in the army, loved guns, and didn’t agree with Brandon’s “lifestyle.” He’d remind us of that constantly throughout the season.

These two openly despised each other through the course of the season, but in episode 10, Moto Maji was competing in a Reward Challenge that required them to work in pairs. Because there was a lot of tension in the tribe at that point in time, everyone agreed to draw numbers out of a hat and the two players with matching numbers would be a pair for the challenge.

One by one, Kim Powers and Big Tom matched up, Kim Johnson and Ethan linked together, and T-Bird and Lex high-fived. It was obvious who the final pair was, and it was one that had Big Tom rolling in laughter. Brandon and Frank would be working together in the challenge.

To make matters better, the two won the challenge and got to watch a movie together while gorging on movie theatre favorites such as hot dogs, nachos, and candy. While Frank still noted he wasn’t a fan of Brandon’s lifestyle, he did appear to have a good time watching the movie, even if Brandon was sitting right next to him.

While these moments still occur on the show, people don’t appear to be as outwardly homophobic on Survivor anymore. Definitely was a good thing that shows how far we have come as a society.
