The loveable underdogs

After the tribe swap in episode 4 (more on that later), the former dysfunctional Maraamu tribe became a group that was hard to root against. After Sarah was booted from the tribe, Maraamu was down to four members (three women and an elderly man), but they somehow went on a tear, winning three straight challenges.

One of the tribe members, Gina Crews, hadn’t won anything for 13 days and was practically left for dead after Hunter Ellis was kicked off third. So that first time Gina won something was a sweet moment.

Maraamu got to raid Rotu’s camp for winning that reward and that, in turn, helped them win their only immunity challenge, which was the classic S.O.S. challenge. When that boat blew its horn and Maraamu freaked out, fans were also giddy because it kept the lovable crew together for another three days.

In episode 6, in a physical relay/boat race, Maraamu won yet again (on a technicality, but it still counts) and that was one of the more exciting challenges from the season. Kathy and Gina were up against John and Robert “The General” (one of Survivor’s first dumb nicknames) and made up a lot of time against them in the outrigger canoe race.

Sadly, Maraamu lost again before the merge and Gina was booted, but the post-swap Maraamu tribe was one of the more memorable moments from season 4 for giving us true underdogs to root for.
