Wearing orange, the Lairo tribe of Survivor: Island of the Idols has a colorful cast of characters including an Olympic Medalist, a poker player, and the first Canadian.
This Survivor preseason has taught us a lot about each castaway, their outlook towards the game and what skills they bring to the table. Tonight, we actually get to see these new castaways in action, putting our pregame perceptions of them to the test. However, the bios and interviews gave us some real insight into how they will play this game. Here are our expectations of how the members of the Lairo tribe will fit in as Survivor: Island of the Idols begins.
Most likely to be the tribe leader: Tom Laidlaw
Not only is Tom Laidlaw 19 years older than anyone else on his tribe, but his personality is built for leading. From playing a decade of pro hockey to currently managing his own fitness brand, Tom has the experience and the right attitude to manage others. He doesn’t come off as a demanding or a stubborn leader either, so I could see the tribe respecting his decisions.
Biggest challenge contributors: Missy Byrd and Aaron Meredith
This cast is one of the most jacked ones yet, and these two players are no exception. Missy Byrd not only served in the Air Force, but she also played competitive basketball with her school and I expect her to bring a Michaela-like athleticism. Aaron Meredith isn’t only a regular at the gym, he owns the gym!
And we can’t forget about Elizabeth Beisel, an Olympic medalist, who is sure to dominate any swimming portions. Dean Kowalski also played basketball at a high level in college and high school, even sharing the court with future NBA stars so don’t count out Dean’s athleticism.
Strategic masterminds in disguise: Vince Moua and Karishma Patel
Comparing his physical ability to the players above, Vince Moua isn’t going to strike anyone as an intimidating player. His jovial personality will help him to build friendships without looking threatening but watch out, Vince knows this game and understands how to manipulate a relationship. I think Karishma Patel will be the more vocal player of the two, but she’s a true Survivor superfan and could take control of the game if she plays it right.
Lairo’s class clowns are: Elaine Stott and Ronnie Bardah
Both of these players were a joy to listen to in the preseason interviews on RHAP. Being from Kentucky, Elaine Stott has more of that country humor landing hilarious comments at the right time. Ronnie Bardah is more about those quick-witted, biting remarks, as I’m sure he’ll produce several great lines throughout the season.
Biggest superfan: Chelsea Walker
Chelsea Walker has been watching this show since she was 8 years old and has been applying for six straight years! She knows Survivor inside and out and understands the ways she should and shouldn’t act in varying situations. I wouldn’t anticipate Chelsea making any rookie mistakes including volunteering for challenges or telling everyone about an idol she found.
Early favorite to win: Missy Byrd
Besides her physical talent, Missy is a fun and social person who is sure to get along with her castaways. She mentioned how she believes her military background will make it easier to connect with older veterans and ones with a strong work ethic. Pair her social game with her physical ability and strategic mind, and you have a player who has the complete package.
