An incredibly close finish with some intense emotion made yesterday’s Survivor: Island of the Idols’ Immunity Challenge a joy to watch!

This article discusses the events from episode 7 of Survivor: Island of the Idols.

Once again Survivor: Island of the Idols has made overly simple challenges into entertaining moments. There’s definitely been a few cool new ideas production has created for this season, but they’re still getting a lot of mileage from their older designs as in episode 7 of Island of the Idols. Let’s take a deeper look at yesterday’s thrilling challenge.

Immunity Challenge

First off, three castaways from each tribe had to toss heavy coconuts into a net. When the net has enough weight, it will fall to the ground and release large, bulky puzzle pieces. The tribes have to bring all of their heavy pieces to a solving station to begin working on it.

The first tribe to complete their block puzzle wins immunity. You can rewatch this epic challenge below. Although there was only one challenge in this episode, it’s worth noting that there was a Reward Challenge that didn’t get aired. The press photos for this episode reveal that fact.

This battle for immunity began with both tribes having to adjust to the weight of a coconut. They had to drop the idea of throwing it overhand and resort to the good old between the legs, granny-style. Tommy, Missy and Elizabeth did a solid job for Vokai, getting into a better rhythm with the more coconuts they threw.

The Lairo trio of Janet, Jack and Dean didn’t fair as well, but they didn’t fall too far behind either. By the time their net fell, Vokai was still collecting their puzzle pieces, but in this challenge, every second makes a difference.

Lauren wasn’t shy with directing Dan and Elaine what to do with each piece. Whereas; Kellee, Jamal and Karishma seemed a little more calm for Lairo, as they did a good job of keeping pace and even catching up to the other tribe. Despite Elaine’s clear doubt, Vokai genuinely believed that they completed their puzzle, only to have Jeff come over and confirm that they made a mistake.

That gave Lairo a huge momentum swing, as they continued their comeback and were only a few blocks away from winning it all now. With both tribes frantically adjusting their pieces, it was pure, edge of your seat excitement. Elaine and Dan placed their final pieces and summoned Jeff over while Lairo was working on pushing in their last block. Vokai came away with an incredibly narrow victory.

Challenge takeaways

This challenge is shockingly simple for an Immunity Challenge. There’s nothing special about the two phases of this challenge, we’ve seen both of them many times in previous Survivor seasons. What made this challenge exciting was the level of competition between the two tribes.

You could feel the momentum building for each tribe at several points throughout the challenge. The puzzle was simply a matter of arranging blocks instead of figuring out what it’s supposed to look like, which helps to prevent a blowout. Watching the castaways’ emotions boil over during the puzzle phase legitimized the significance of winning immunity that day.
