29. Philippines (Season 25)
Featuring three returning players as pseudo-captains after they were medically evacuated in previous appearances, Philippines featured just 18 castaways and three tribes of six to begin the game—a rarity overall in the history of the show. However, it ultimately worked out as the season was wholly entertaining throughout.
Love him or hate him, the return of Jonathan Penner is always a welcomed sight when it comes to Survivor. Yes, he can undoubtedly be annoying and ultimately a pain. However, he’s a smart player that is always ready to make a big move, which makes for compelling television. What’s more, this season introduced us to Malcolm Freberg, whose blend of physical prowess, arrogance and charm make him a lasting character.
The season has its flaws, certainly. Michael Skupin was an odd choice for a returning player that has only become more difficult to watch as time goes on. There were some other storylines and characters that we could have done without, as well.
However, winner Denise Stapley might be one of the most underrated players in the show’s history and made for high drama throughout. She holds the distinction of being the only winner to attend every Tribal Council throughout a season. Stapley emerged every single time, though, giving a whole new meaning to the label of Sole Survivor.
