Survivor favorites who may never play again: Number 1 – “Boston” Rob Mariano
Arguably the most important and popular player in Survivor history, Boston Rob looked like a relic in season 40. While he was still able to make some early moves in Winners at War, once the awe wore off among his fellow winners, they made it clear they were not going to fall into line with his strategies or style of play.
His use of manipulation and intimidation just didn’t seem a fit for the game anymore. Rob has never been a physical beast at challenges, but he always competed, using his brain as much as his physical strength. While older and more out of shape in season 40, he still looked capable of being an asset in challenges.
That said, it would be hard to fathom any set of players keeping Rob around long enough even to sniff another win. Strategically speaking, the game has evolved past where Rob could be successful without significant changes to his gameplay.
Boston Rob has played more games and days than anyone. He has a win and a second-place finish, but his other appearances in the game haven’t ended well for him. It could even be argued he is slightly overrated.
His legacy in Survivor lore is permanently etched in stone, but it may be time for other players to be the focus of the game and future all-star casts. Boston Rob has nothing else to prove. Everyone can see what the game means to him and how much he means to the game and the fans.
It seems unlikely Boston Rob, Parvati, Sandra, Tyson, or Ethan will ever play the game of Survivor again. Fans of the game will miss them, but it’s alright. Even the best have to retire sometime. Still, you never know…!
