With Survivor 50 having just crowned its winner, the show is now set to celebrate another major milestone: its 26th anniversary on the air. As of 2026, the flagship Survivor franchise has reached a landmark that few television series could ever dream of achieving: having just completed its 50th season, with the 51st on the horizon, and marking over a quarter-century of continuous broadcast.
On May 31st, 2000, Survivor: Borneo premiered, featuring 16 Americans on an adventure of a lifetime, culminating in Richard Hatch being crowned the first Sole Survivor. A worldwide phenomenon ensued, with Survivor now having multiple franchises across the globe and thousands of people still watching every episode week to week.
To commemorate its 26th year on the air, I’ve decided to mention 26 iconic moments from the show. Narrowing down the list was no joke, but I’m extremely proud of the ones that ultimately prevailed. The parameters for choosing these specific moments were the following: they either shaped the show, are memorable regardless of time, and—most importantly—are Survivor-core, which basically means they exude outwit, outplay, and outlast.
Without further ado, here’s a list of 26 iconic Survivor moments—in chronological order.

23 years ago tonight, we saw 16 people begin the adventure of a lifetime, and TV was forever changed.#Survivor is still--quite objectively--going strong with no end in sight!#Borneo #Tagi #Pagong pic.twitter.com/9F1Y8kVdbq
1. The marooning in Survivor: Borneo
The moment that literally started it all. Survivor: Borneo began with a dream, well, technically 16 dreams, but it immediately showed that the players were going to give it their all as they jumped overboard off of a gigantic boat, all in the hopes of becoming the Sole Survivor... and the winner of $1 million. A truly unforgettable moment in reality TV history.
Happy 25th anniversary to the finale of #Survivor Borneo! A quarter-century ago, over 50 million people watched Richard Hatch take home the win. And, iconically, Sue Hawk created one of the biggest moments in reality TV history. This will forever be my favorite moment pic.twitter.com/Hp2NPuxp0r

2. Sue Hawk’s rats vs snakes speech in Survivor: Borneo
This watershed moment was exactly what differentiated Survivor from other TV shows, turning it from a competition show into a cutthroat, ruthless, and social one. Sue Hawk demonstrated how crucial jury management was before that concept entered the Survivor vernacular, and it became a true representation of human relationships breaking in real time.

3. Tina Wesson winning Survivor: The Australian Outback over Colby Donaldson
I was highly tempted to mention the first-ever tribe swap in Survivor, which occurred in Survivor: Africa, where the game's trajectory permanently changed, and therefore, players expected a swap or something similar in every season afterwards, which mostly factored into their strategising. However, I ultimately decided to name Tina Wesson’s win over Colby Donaldson in Survivor: The Australian Outback for the following reasons.
Wesson winning in Survivor’s second season was a monumental shift for the show for various reasons. First, it demonstrated that multiple challenge wins didn’t guarantee a win at Final Tribal Council. Second, Donaldson’s decision to take Wesson over Keith Famie was fatal, as Wesson had a better social game than both Donaldson and Famie, highlighting the game’s social element. Third, it once again showed the importance of jury management, as perhaps if Donaldson had played his cards differently with juror Jerri Manthey, for instance, then he could’ve won regardless of who was sitting next to him.

How does Probst NOT bring back the famous Coconut Chopping Challenge to shake up the game?!
I ask John Carroll how this is possible & he gives his recounting of how much it exposed the Rotu 4 in Survivor Marquesas. Full vid on YouTube. pic.twitter.com/eIvUiHJx0l
4. The Rotu Four downfall in Survivor: Marquesas
Survivor: Marquesas is highly underrated and often overlooked by the Survivor alumni, fans, and even the show’s host, Jeff Probst. However, it is a strategic cornerstone for the show, as it was the first time a power structure was truly dismantled by the minority due to a challenge.
The iconic coconut chopping challenge showed how the rest of the season would’ve played out had the outcast of the season continued to allow the Rotu Four alliance to dominate the game. Instead, they voted them out one by one, outlasting them all, with former Maraamu member Vecepia Towery taking home the win.

5. Sandra Diaz-Twine being a menace in Survivor: Pearl Islands
Sandra Diaz-Twine is one of reality TV and Survivor’s best contestants, as she was hilariously snarky and a ruthless storyteller who didn’t care about what anyone thought about her. Every time Diaz-Twine did or didn’t do something on the island, it was with intent.
From getting loud with Jonny Fairplay, dismantling the Morgan’s tribe camp, and blaming ally Christa Hastie for spilling the fish, Diaz-Twine gave one iconic moment after another. While her challenge prowess was nonexistent, her remarkable social game ultimately led her to win the season. Also, she was only one vote away from having the first perfect game in Survivor’s history. (no votes for elimination and all jury votes)

6. Boston Rob Mariano betrays Lex van den Berghe in Survivor: All-Stars
I was going to name the whole Survivor: All-Stars season as an iconic moment, as it was not only the first returning players of the show’s history, but also because it was a chaotic, mess-filled game from start to finish. However, I would be remiss not to pinpoint the moment that surpassed the island and which affected relationships to this day.
Back in the day, Survivor alumni used to grow extremely close with each other after connecting post-game, which is why several of them went into All-Stars with real friendships and bonds. Fast forward to Boston Rob Mariano promising Lex van den Berghe safety at the merge if the latter saved the former’s girlfriend, Amber Brkich, and later going against his word. Van den Berghe lambasted Mariano at the end of the game for being duplicitous, and their friendship in real life never recovered. This was another watershed moment for the show, as it changed the rules for players returning in subsequent seasons.

7. Cirie Fields' masterful 3-2-1 plan in Survivor: Panama
Cirie Fields, legendary six-time Survivor player and mother of all the Fields, became an icon the first time she set foot on the island back in Survivor: Panama. She quickly turned her reputation from the woman who was scared of leaves and who got up from the couch, to the inventor of the 3-2-1 gameplay move still used today.
To appreciate this clever game mechanic, a rewatch of Exile Island helps, but here are the essentials. Fields realised she did not need a true majority to eliminate someone. She only needed to know where the votes would go and ensure her target had just enough to leave, while others picked up spare votes in case of an idol. With sharp social skills, Fields outplayed her tribe, removing the only easy finalist and earning her place as a Survivor master strategist.

8. Billy Garcia exclaims his love for Candice Cody in Survivor: Cook Islands
No one who has seen Survivor will ever forget where they were when they first watched this love confession. Survivor: Cook Islands had race wars, the first Super Idol, the Aitu Four, two mutinies, baby Ozzy Lusth, several showmances, and Jonathan Penner’s beef with Jeff Probst, to name a few iconic moments.
However, Billy Garcia’s declaration of love for Candice Cody (née Woodcock), from the Raro tribe, will truly outlive every other Survivor moment in the season, on this list, and worldwide history. Not only was it a raw and honest moment from Garcia, but it was also a fall-of-your-chair, hilarious one, which should be placed in every museum in commemoration.
Many would say that Todd had the greatest tribal council of all time on #Survivor This allowed him to claim the title of Sole Survivor in China. 9. Todd Herzog’s winning jury performance in Survivor: China
Besides being one of the best seasons, Survivor: China also gave us one of the show’s best winners ever in Todd Herzog. Despite people underestimating Herzog, he quickly demonstrated how adaptable, social, and manipulative he could be, as well as being the strategic force who eliminated powerhouse James Clement with two idols in his bag.
Herzog’s pinnacle moment came in the season’s Final Tribal Council, where he gave a masterclass on how a finalist should present themselves against a jury while explaining their game. Herzog’s response to Jean-Robert Bellande’s question cemented his outstanding performance and was the final touch for him to win the season.

10. The ¨it's a f****** stick!¨ fake idol in Survivor: Micronesia
Survivor: Micronesia is definitely one of those seasons that could have an entire list of iconic moments by itself. Without a doubt, this moment would need to be included.
To summarise, Ozzy Lusth had found the real immunity idol and created a fake one to cover his tracks, leaving behind a stick with a smiley face. Jason Siska later found the fake idol and brought it back to camp, thinking it was the real deal. He gave it to Eliza Orlins to save herself at the upcoming vote.
Being a two-time player and a brighter bulb than Siska, Orlins immediately saw through the fake idol scheme, but as Siska was still adamant it was real, Orlins called it as she saw it, "it's a f****** stick." Orlins later played the fake idol, nonetheless, while fully knowing she was about to go home, which Probst then threw into the fire as he does when someone plays a fake advantage. Lusth then cried out about losing the stick, as it had taken hours to do.
Remarkably, this was only the beginning of what was to come.

11. The Black Widow Brigade (metaphorically) eat the men in Survivor: Micronesia
As I said, Survivor: Micronesia is an iconic season through and through. From its cast, petty grievances throughout the show, unforgettable challenge moments, several medevacs, and the formation of one of the most lethal alliances in Survivor history: the Black Widow Brigade.
The BWB alliance consisted of Parvati Shallow, Cirie Fields, Amanda Kimmel, Natalie Bolton, and Alexis Jones, who, one by one, eliminated the men in the season in an almost unrepeatable fashion. The men saw the signs and still ignored them, and even after Lusth and Siska were eliminated in such ways, Erik Reichenbach fell prey to the brigade as well with the necklace move. Shallow ended up winning, and the women’s alliance, as well as their gameplay, is still talked about to this day as a life lesson both on and off the island.

12. First immunity challenge in Survivor: Heroes vs Villains
I considered adding Survivor: Gabon’s voting confessionals as an iconic moment since they were petty, personal, and vindictive—something we don’t see on Survivor nowadays and should be remembered—but I just couldn’t wait to get to Survivor’s best season ever. Survivor: Heroes vs Villains had absolutely everything a show needs to succeed: a stellar cast, masterful gameplay, egregious mistakes, hilarious commentary, and legendary feuds and friendships.
Every fan knows the goose-bump-inducing moment of seeing the Heroes and Villains of the last 19 seasons getting together in one place, and all of them giving it their all to win that first challenge. It had a dislocated shoulder, a flashing scene, a flipping off one, a former physical marvel getting dragged all over, and it was all in the first ten minutes of the season! Just a delicious appetizer of what was to come.

13. Parvati Shallow plays two idols in Survivor: Heroes vs Villains
The epitome of what a legendary Survivor move is was Parvati Shallow’s double idol play on Survivor: Heroes vs Villains. The jury phase is about to start. There are ten OG Heroes and ten OG Villains, and it all comes down to this Tribal Council to decide the fate of the season.
There were a number of cumulative factors that led to this moment: J.T. Thomas’s complete misread of the Villain’s tribe dynamics, Thomas giving an idol to Russell Hantz, Hantz giving the idol to Shallow, and Shallow now having two idols. Then, Shallow gave immunity to Danielle DiLorenzo. Shallow knows the Heroes are targeting the Villains' women because Amanda Kimmel wasn't straightforward with her, and Shallow then protected both Sandra Diaz-Twine and Jerri Manthey with the idols, while placing all votes on Thomas as vengeance. All in all, a 10 out of 10 on how to play the game and getting away with murder in the process.

14. Sandra Diaz-Twine wins Survivor twice
There are three American players who have become two-time Survivor winners, but the first was Sandra Diaz-Twine. Out of two games, Diaz-Twine won back-to-back, making it one of the best Survivor worldwide records.
Due to her social and strategic gameplay, Diaz-Twine won over the Heroes tribe during HvV, as well as by continuously warning them against nefarious Russell Hantz. Diaz-Twine was rewarded with her second crown, another $1 million, and the title of Survivor queen.

15. Denise Stapley and Malcolm Freeberg make the Final Four in Survivor: Philippines
I am biased toward Survivor: Philippines, as it was the first Survivor season I got to see live, which marked the beginning of my lifelong fandom of the show. Therefore, I had to include one of Survivor's best underdog stories.
Coming from losing every challenge and attending every Tribal up until the tribe swap, Denise Stapley and Malcolm Freeberg had no business making it as far as they did. Thanks to their unbreakable bond, an epic story, and a smart strategy, they reached the Final Four together, with Stapley ultimately winning. Beat that, Hollywood.

16. The three amigos Tribal Council in Survivor: Caramoan
Survivor: Caramoan failed due to multiple reasons, and its pre-merge phase was as dull as a doorknob. However, things picked up after the merge, particularly thanks to a player mentioned above.
Malcolm Freeberg was a massive target on Caramoan due to being a triple threat: he was smart, charismatic, and lethal at challenges. Therefore, he was on everyone’s radar, especially after he became close to Eddie Fox and Reynold Toepfer, two other underdogs who were Freeberg’s eerily similar typecast.
The self-named Three Amigos trio then decided to make a move against the majority alliance and its leader, Phillip Sheppard. Toepfer won immunity, and Freeberg used his two idols to protect himself and Fox. While the amigos were voted out after Sheppard due to the danger they posed, it was nonetheless a highlight of comedic relief, a comeuppance for the Specialist, and entertainment during a boring season.

17. Cierra Eastin votes out her mom in Survivor: Blood vs Water
I tried to shy away from overused Survivor moments, such as the dead grandma lie, but I couldn’t pass up the chance to bring this moment back. Ciera Eastin voting out her mom, Laura Morett, in Survivor: Blood vs Water, was truly an unhinged moment that will go down in Survivor’s history as being one of the most ruthless yet necessary moves.
Eastin quickly demonstrated she was the strategic powerhouse between her and her mom, and, since Morett was already a target, they decided it was better for Eastin to proceed in the game alone to go further. This plan worked as Eastin placed fifth overall, but not before delivering a heartbreaking move and consolidating herself as a fan favourite to later return to the game, twice.

18. The first jury member blindside in Survivor: Cagayan
Every time I want to show Survivor to someone unfamiliar with the show, I pick Survivor: Cagayan, as it is the epitome of what the game entails. From its Brains vs Brawn vs Beauty theme to its unmatched newbie cast, it has everything that every season should want to emulate.
The season’s zenith was the first Tribal Council post-merge, as alliances were either solidified or blasted, and several players’ legacies were formed: Sarah Lacina’s original villain story, the birth of "Chaos" Kass McQuillen, the vendetta between the Brains of McQuillen, Spencer Bledsoe, and Tasha Fox, which carried to Survivor: Cambodia, and more. Plus, it was also the beginning of Tony Vlachos's road to becoming an eventual two-time winner, so this moment HAD to be on this list.

19. Fans voting for the Survivor: Cambodia cast
This should’ve been a repeat experience for Survivor 50: In the Hands of the Fans, but I digress. Survivor: Cambodia offered Survivor fans the chance of a lifetime: choosing which players would get a second chance in the game by voting for their favourites.
I remember this time on social media as a bloodbath: players clamouring for fans' votes, fans making videos and lists explaining why some players deserved the shot more than others, and so on. While I certainly regret voting for some people instead of others in hindsight, the cast turned out almost perfectly, and the final results showed that fans had their finger on the pulse of what an entertaining season should be. All in all, it was a fever dream of a moment, and it truly led to one of the show´s best seasons ever.

20. "Wentworth will not count" moment in Survivor: Cambodia
Many people questioned why Kelley Wentworth was in Survivor: Cambodia after not getting a great first run. However, Wentworth proved everyone wrong by being a challenge beast, a strategic force, and a fearless player throughout the season.
From collecting an idol right underneath everyone’s noses during the first immunity challenge, to negating NINE votes against her via an idol play, Wentworth was and is, truly, one of the best players in Survivor’s history.
Re-watching #SurvivorDavidVsGoliath and I have to say that @ThatNatalieCole is an amazing TV character. She was literally an -experience-. Her ultimate power move? Wearing her jacket in her final words. Ultimate "checkmate" I love everything about her time on #Survivor pic.twitter.com/cJkyAOIu8A

21. Jacketgate in Survivor: David vs Goliath
Another Survivor hit during a dry spell was Survivor: David vs Goliath. While the name didn’t invoke confidence, it turned out to be a brilliant addition to the Survivor lexicon. A group of "Davids" vs a group of "Goliaths" disputed the winner's crown in the midst of one of the most entertaining, hilarious, and strategy-driven seasons overall.
One of its best moments occurred early on when Natalie Cole was voted out, but not before Angelina Keeley begged for her jacket before she left. Cole, just eliminated, didn’t even deign to respond, which made the moment even more hysterical, fully displaying the full range of human emotions among everyone present or watching on their screens.

22. Having 20 winners on the same beach together in Survivor: Winners at War
2020 was not the best year for the Survivor world, nor for the entire planet, for that matter, and I’m not being hyperbolic. Survivor: Winners at War could’ve helped everyone survive had it not had the worst boot order in Survivor, had it not been convoluted to the point of madness of an uneven edit or ridiculous advantages left and right, and because the finale had to be over Zoom.
Regardless, the first minutes of the season displayed what few shows could only ever dream of achieving: 20 former Survivor winners on the same beach competing to become the best of the best. Like I said, it was a messy season for plenty of seasons, but seeing as this format will likely never be repeated until probably Survivor 80, it was a delight to see this moment happen, especially in the midst of what was coming.

23. Maryanne Oketch’s Final Tribal Council performance in Survivor: 42
The New Era of Survivor has been contentious, to say the least. While plenty of fans get that the show needs to change or evolve to continue, none of us thought these changes would come at the expense of an almost literal reinvention.
Despite the hated obvious changes, there’s been some silver linings throughout its seasons, and one of them came in Survivor 42. If Todd Herzog gave a masterclass in Final Tribal Council performance, Maryanne Oketch took the class and performed it in overload mode.
Oketch managed to display the true depth of her game knowledge while also impressing the jury and viewers as to why she deserved her final spot, and also the win. Dee Valladares’ performance in Survivor 45 is a close second, but the moment Oketch pulled that hidden immunity idol will forever be ingrained in everyone’s minds as one of the game’s best moments.

24. Jesse Lopez votes out Cody Assenmacher in Survivor 43
Jesse Lopez was a ray of sunshine in Survivor 43, and from the moment he began playing, everyone knew he was there to become a star. He quickly became best friends with Cody Assenmacher, and both created chaos throughout the season by being in tandem with the game’s pulse.
However, Lopez realised he needed to cut Assenmacher at some point if he wanted to have the best chances of winning, which is exactly what he did with Assenmacher’s idol at the Final Six. Not only was this a necessary, yet ruthless, move, but it was also another example of how real the game is: two strangers becoming friends who then are tangled in the politicking of a game like Survivor, and then doing the unthinkable to go further. Survivor is a cutthroat, vicious game that isn’t for everyone, which is why it's still so beloved by thousands all these years later.

25. Liz Wilcox's "I’m pissed!" moment in Survivor 46
Survivor 46 is a pandemonium on steroids, to say the least. Some unhinged cast members, ridiculous gameplay at times, and questionable jury votes, all mixed throughout the season, gave the audience one of the most entertaining seasons in recent times.
One person who added some gasoline to the fire was Liz Wilcox, who was even more in starvation mode than the rest of the people around her, as she was allergic to 99.99% of the jungle and therefore had eaten even less. As an Applebee’s reward was offered, Wilcox gave it her all to win it, as she would finally get to it.
Unfortunately for Wilcox, her frenemy, Q Burdette, won and then didn’t take her on the reward, despite everything her pleas. As any hangry human being would, Wilcox burst out in emotion after missing out, and the iconic "I’m pissed" meme was born.

26. The first five minutes of Survivor 50
We’ve made it to the end, my friends, and I couldn’t close out this list without adding something about the latest season, Survivor 50. While it was a contentious season from its cast to its game design, it was still the fiftieth season to air about our beloved show.
As previously mentioned, in this article and across social media, the season was a downer in several respects, but its first five minutes are every Survivor fan's fever dream. They encapsulate the essence of the show over the last 26 years and provide the right incentive to rewatch every season prior. Since it’s the off-season, we have the whole summer to do exactly that.
