Survivor 50 is off to a terrific start on CBS and Paramount+. Through two episodes, we've already had so much entertaining action and heartbreaking moments, but it feels like there's something missing from this season.
Of course, there are several players whose fans can point to as missing pieces of Survivor 50. While I would agree with most of them, I don't think we're hearing from the true celebrity of the game, Jeff Probst.
For some reason, Jeff (or CBS) chose not to bring back On Fire with Jeff Probst, and it's created a bit of a void in the conversation during the most anticipated season of the series in a long time.
Officially, Probst released this statement to Entertainment Weekly about the podcast:
"Survivor 50 was designed as a celebration, and it features one of the most exciting game designs we've ever done. Because of that, we made a conscious decision not to immediately pull back the curtain while it was happening.
"We wanted fans to discover it on their own and experience it in real time. Then at the live finale, we'll have the opportunity to reflect on all parts of the season together."

Survivor 50 would be so much better with On Fire with Jeff Probst
I understand the reason Jeff didn't come back for On Fire this season, but it's just a bummer for those who like to learn more about what's happening behind the scenes, why it's happening, and appreciate the little moments of Survivor that we can only get from someone in the loop. Sure, the player exit interviews are great, but they don't necessarily fully capture the scope of everything going on because that's only one player's perspective.
For me, and maybe it's just part of my Survivor routine lately, hearing Jeff, Jay Wolff, and a former player talk about the episode was as important as watching the episode since On Fire started back in Survivor 44. As fans, we learned so much more about the game, what was happening, and why players were making certain moves.
Sure, there is no shortage of Survivor podcasts these days. You can hear from former players across the board, from Rob Cesternino, Tyson Apostol, and more. Their perspective is important, too, and sometimes even more important than Jeff, who is also acting as the captain of the ship in many respects.
To me, there's clearly a void in understanding some of the choices this season. I would like to hear Probst go on an in-depth monologue about the Billie Eilish Boomerang Idol or the Rick Devens vs. Joe Hunter feud. I also would have loved to hear Jeff's point of view on what happened with Kyle Fraser's injury, what happened behind the scenes, and how gut-wrenching it was for him, as a person and fan, to watch one of the warriors of the season bow out in such a devastating way.
It just doesn't add up why CBS would save all these conversations that could be happening now for the finale or the postseason. It's just not the same as getting those kernels of important information in the moment.
Now, I understand if Jeff is too busy preparing for Survivor 51 and 52. It just seems like a massive missed opportunity to not put your biggest stakeholder in a more forward-facing role during this epic season, especially when you have returning fans tuning back in to watch their favorites.
From what I can see, we're headed for an incredible season with a lot of big moments and bold gameplay. It would be great to see Jeff bringing that energy and love to the series that he always does on the podcast.
I'm not losing sleep that On Fire with Jeff Prosbt is off the air, so to speak, for Survivor 50, but it would be a lot better to hear regularly from Jeff throughout the season, especially when there's so much good stuff happening.
Watch Survivor 50 every Wednesday on CBS and Paramount+!
