Did Danny Kilby really learn how to swim from someone on Reddit?

In the premiere episode of Survivor 51, we got an unusual anecdote from Danny Kilby about how he learned to swim, but was it true?

We’ve seen some pretty interesting characters across the years onSurvivorand I think so far the most curious player inSurvivor51is Danny Kilby.

Right off the bat, we see him struggling to find a life preserver on the marooning boat before jumping into the ocean and doggy paddling to shore. And then we get a very unique confessional where Kilby admits that he learned to swim from a guy on Reddit…and he paid this man with beer.

So, of course, Kilby wanted to clear up any misconceptions about the experience by turning to social media and revealing that yes, that is in fact true. Not only that, but the guy who taught him to swim—Ryan Robinson of Toronto, Ontario, CA—came to his premiere watch party and shared his side of the story.

Check out the full video below:

Probably the most interesting part of all of this is the fact that because of his pre-game NDA, Kilby couldn’t even reveal why he was getting swim lessons, nor did he know exactly what he’d be tested on to ensure him a spot on the season 51 cast. So what did he do? He told Ryan he was joining the military.

So while kids were playing Marco Polo with parents teaching their kids how to blow bubbles in the water, Kilby was diving down to the bottom of the pool to retrieve weights and swim back to the surface as well as untying knots underwater. And, I mean, kudos to Ryan because those areexactlythe kinds of things that will happen onSurvivor.

It’s actually shocking to find out that Kilby went through perfectSurvivortraining without his coach even knowing that’s what he was training him for. And even though he started off a little slow with the water activities, maybe Kilby will be a secret water threat who completely dominates in every single water challenge for the rest of the game? Stranger things have happened onSurvivor, if I’m being honest…

And based on last episode’s “Next Time onSurvivor” preview, it seems this week we’re getting a challenge with at least some parts specifically happening in the water—during a storm nonetheless. So we’ll see if Ryan’s teaching pay off to help Kilby out in the next challenge (and moving forward in the game).
