Did Survivor: Tocantins have the best cast of all time?

Sitting perfectly between the hyper-strategic chaos ofSurvivor: Micronesiaand the exciting anniversary celebration ofSurvivor: Heroes vs. Villains, season 18 (Survivor: Tocantins) often flies under the radar when debating which seasons ofSurvivorare the best.

But the reality is that it is one of the best masterclasses inSurvivorhistory and it’s not because of complex strategy introduced thanks to advantages or twists. It’s simply due to the sheer amount of iconic, highly distinct and memorable personalities that were assembled to compete against each other in the Brazilian highlands.

A completely new cast of players,Tocantinsoffers the most balanced, hilarious, and intelligent group of contestants not just inSurvivor, but in reality television history.

First of all, this season introduced us to four future legends in theSurvivorhistory books. We saw the debut of the “Dragon Slayer,”Benjamin “Coach” Wadealongside the introduction of the ultimate deadpan villain, Tyson Apostol. And on the other side of the season wereSurvivor’sfavorite bonded bros—and the template for modern iconic duo alliances—golden boy J.T. Thomas and clever strategist Stephen Fishbach.

These four players went on to define the new school eras of the show across 10+ combined returning appearances. After J.T. took home theTocantinswin with the only“perfect” gameinSurvivorhistory, Tyson went on to winBlood vs. Waterand later make a mark onWinners at Waras well. And after Stephen returned as a fan favorite, voted-in for a second chance inCambodia, we also got the return of Coach in the big anniversary celebration that wasSurvivor 50.

But beyond that, the season also featured some unforgettable supporting players like finalist Taj Johnson-George (the pop icon who managed a secret cross-tribe alliance), Sierra Reed (the perpetual underdog constantly attacked by Coach and other Timbira members), Brendan Synnott (the original “dragon” thatCoach needed to slay), Erinn Lobdell (the underestimated strategist whose post-merge flip created endless drama), and Sandy Burgin (the eccentric bus driver who threw her tribe under a metaphorical bus on Day 1 by looking for the hidden immunity idol instead of getting a head start on their shelter).

And because of all the egos in the game, we saw the eventual implosion of the Timbira tribe—the opposite of aPagonging—as personal feuds and a lack of unity slowly dwindled their numbers despite the fact that they held the majority post-merge. But that allowed our Jalapao three to weaponize relationships by bonding with the Timbira members and slowly give themselves all the power in the game without needing a million hidden advantages.

When people say, “I want to go back to howSurvivorused to be,” season 18 isexactlywhat they’re talking about. All the strategy that came out of the game developed naturally based on human relationships rather than production-placed twists.Tocantinscaptured a brief, magical window inSurvivorhistory where the old school camp life met new school strategizing, making it a true masterclass.

And a lot of that has to do with the season having the perfect cast of players. Just enough give and pull between people that there wasalwayssomething big happening back at camp or at Tribal Council.
