New Survivor 51 rumors suggest old-school Survivor formatting could be returning

We’re still a month away from the Survivor 50 finale, but fans are already getting excited for the next season of the show. While this rumor hasn’t been confirmed yet, its potential veracity could bring old-school Survivor-style back to our screens.

Survivor 50 is rapidly coming to an end, with only one month of the season to air. Yet fans are already speculating about the franchise’s future and what we might expect next fall with Survivor 51.

For starters, it’s already been confirmed that Survivor will continue on with Survivor 51 and Survivor 52, each premiering in late 2026 and early 2027, respectively. Survivor 51 is currently filming in Fiji, and we can expect further news (and spoilers, so be careful) from the next season in the coming weeks and months.

While CBS won’t release any official casting or production news until a few weeks before the Survivor 51 premiere, rumors are already circulating about the show's potential new direction, and it’s one that already has us all excited. According to Inside Survivor, a well-known and highly respected Survivor fan page, Survivor 51 would feature 20 players divided into two tribes.

Via his Patreon and Discord accounts, Martin Holmes (also known as Redmond) released early Survivor 51 cast information. Holmes published that as of April 26, 2026, these are the latest rumors: “Survivor 51 is currently in the middle of filming in Fiji. Production should be wrapped up by mid-May with the cast back in the US around a week before the Survivor 50 finale.”

Holmes went on, “There is speculation that the cast is 20 players (newbies) and two tribes, at least to begin the game. We’re still working on confirmation of this, but it is seeming likely.”

This update is, of course, music to our ears, as plenty of fans have been clamoring for Survivor to return to some of its “old-school” era decisions, rather than the New Era regurgitated formula. For the last six years, since Survivor 41 and through Survivor 49, the show's format has been constrained by the same formula: 18 players divided into three tribes, each with 3 women and 3 men.

Other recycled twists that have inundated the New Era have been the 26-day shortened seasons; no tribe swaps, which have repeatedly caused one tribe to continue to lose, which obviously doesn’t make great TV; the beware advantages; the Journeys, which have caused multiple players to lose their votes; and the controversial mergatories, which have forced players to compete to “earn the merge.” The “Shot in the Dark” twist is the least criticized aspect of the New Era; however, it still has its detractors.

The Reality TV News/Updates Twitter account shared this Survivor 51 update during the past weekend, hyping up even more fans about having a sliver of old-school Survivor. Plenty were ecstatic to read it, while others were concerned about getting too excited, since a Tribe Swap was likely to happen eventually, and we would be stuck with three tribes once more.

Regardless of a Tribe Swap, it is thrilling to hear that we may see more players next season (as we’ve seen on Survivor 50, which started out with 24), as it offers more opportunities for players to socialize, bond, and strategize. Also, while nostalgia plays a part in people’s enthusiasm, we’ve seen time and time again that two-tribe seasons have produced incredible seasons in the past, and this could be a key factor in Survivor getting its mojo back!
