Survivor 50 wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea, and for good reason. From its never-ending celebrity cameos to its overblown twists/advantages, it was just one thing after another that kept various fans and viewers from wanting to quit watching to escape the madness.
However, if there was a silver lining throughout it, or in this case, several, it was the friendships we saw emerge throughout the season between some of the cast members. While some rivalries were also started, or apparently ended like the long-time "rivalry" between Ozzy Lusth and Coach Wade from Survivor: South Pacific, the bonds that were created this time around in Fiji were definitely one of this season’s highlights.
Bonds/friendships established prior to Survivor 50 won’t be listed here, but some definitely deserve an honourable mention: the unbreakable bond between Savannah Louie and Rizo Velovic from Survivor 49; the sibling rivalry between Kamilla Karthigesu and Kyle Fraser from Survivor 48; the Goliath alliance between Mike White and Angelina Keeley from Survivor: David vs Goliath; and Jeff Probst’s undying love for Colby Donaldson from all the way back to Survivor: The Australian Outback. Also, the alleged Zoom alliance, will not count!
Kalo besties: Dee Valladares, Tiffany Ervin, and Kamilla Karthigesu
Dee Valladares, Kamilla Karthigesu, and Tiffany Ervin quickly became best friends and allies on the beach after being placed together in the original Kalo tribe. They all found themselves wanting to work together since they had similar gameplay styles, were from the New Era, and wanted to get rid of the old-schoolers.
Unfortunately, their relationship wasn’t fleshed out much in the edit, as none of them ended up winning the season. However, it was an editing mistake not to have seen this alliance receive at least a bit more airtime, as their talks were probably full of strategic insights and remarkable humour.
The nerdy amigos: Rick Devens, Christian Hubicki, and Emily Flippen
Much like the Vatu women, news reporter Rick Devens, robotics professors Dr. Christian Hubicki, and financial analyst Emily Flippen were placed together on the original Cila tribe, which allowed them to bond from day one. While Devens and Hubicki’s bond was shown more throughout the season, it was undeniable that the trio were seen as a strategic threat by the other players.
All three were also viewed as the middle people between multiple alliances, particularly after the merge, and were either continuously targeted for it or pulled into votes to secure the majority. The three players ended up being on the jury together, which cemented their friendship off the show as well.
The Fields family: Cirie Fields, Ozzy Lusth, and Rizo Velovic
The trio of Cirie Fields, Ozzy Lusth, and Rizo Velovic was the most unexpected alliance throughout Survivor 50 for multiple reasons. Even though Fields and Lusth began the game together on the original Cila tribe, no one could have predicted that the "Rizard of Oz" alliance would end up consolidating.
For starters, Fields and Lusth go way back to Survivor: Micronesia, where unforgettably, Fields was part of Lusth’s elimination alongside her Black Widow Brigade alliance. Therefore, it was unlikely they would work together again. Additionally, both Fields and Lusth are old-schoolers, while Velovic is Survivor’s New Era poster boy, and even Fields was shown being wary of Velovic early on the season.
However, the trio ended up bonding and working together post-merge for the majority of the game, and spearheaded every Tribal Council they attended together. They were also known as the "Rizard of Oz" alliance on screen, while plenty of fans dubbed them the Fields family after Fields jokingly stated in a confessional that she saw them as being in a polyamorous relationship. Unfortunately, Velovic ended up working against them and became part of Lusth and Fields’s vote-outs at the Final Eight and Final Six eliminations, respectively.
Tiffany says she was surprised by how little her relationship with Cirie was shown on Survivor 50, because they had an instant connection. Tiffany says she would have gone to the end with Cirie. Our robbed FInal Two: Cirie Fields and Tiffany Ervin
To say a majority of fans were devastated to see Cirie Fields and Tiffany Ervin leave the season in back-to-back eliminations is certainly an understatement. I, for one, was almost catatonic for the entire week after Fields's torch was snuffed, and then to lose Ervin immediately going into the last episode was almost too much. Seeing them both celebrated the way they were during the live finale show helped a little with the healing.
Having said that, one of the best things we learned post-show was how close Ervin and Fields got during the season. While the edit showed them working in tandem during the merge, their personal bond was mostly inferred from their strategic relationship. Ervin then stated in an interview that she and Fields became close right away, and it took only one conversation for them to want to work together.
Ervin also revealed that her ideal plan would’ve been to be at the Final Two alongside Fields, and though Ervin knows Fields would’ve most likely won, she would’ve been content to lose against a legend such as Fields. In her words, the bond that blossomed between these two iconic women was so strong that Ervin felt she had a family member with her on the island.
In a cutthroat, sometimes ruthless game like Survivor, it is great to see relationships form despite all players competing for the same prize. It goes to show that humans truly have the incredible ability to connect despite adversity, and hopefully, these relationships are here to stay forever, as they will always remain on our screens upon every future Survivor 50 rewatch.
