Can Survivor 46 Yanu tribe of 'geniuses' win a challenge?
By Joel Wagler
At the end of the second episode of Survivor 46, the freshly ousted Jess, in her post-tribal interview, appeared completely blindsided by the vote that sent her home. She said:
"They're all geniuses!"
- Jess
Little did she know that her tribe mates weren't geniuses at all, but instead, they were a big, hot, chaotic mess. Instead of just taking the easy vote against Jess as a group, they concocted a series of convoluted plans in order to pull off a blindside.
First, they made a fake idol and hid it for Jess to find. Jess, despite being led almost directly to the hiding place, was too oblivious to find it. So they decided to just give the fake to her directly with instructions to vote for whom Q directed her to.
They weren't very convincing. Jess suspected it was a fake, but Q appeared to put her at ease eventually. The tribe also did a poor job of setting up who Jess should vote for. Remember, all of this was done just so Jess wouldn't play her one-in-six shot in the dark.
In the process, Bhanu became convinced he was the target at tribal and he let spill every thought barely bottled within his head. In the end, Jess played the fake idol for herself and cast her vote on Bhanu. After Jeff read that vote, Bhanu gathered up his possessions, but everyone did, in fact, vote for Jess.
Will Yanu pull off a challenge upset in Survivor 26 episode 3?
It was the right move. Jess, like Jelinsky in episode one, seemed out of place on the beach and hadn't shown much acumen for the game. It was awesome to see Jess eating ants right off the tree, but that was the only Survivor instinct she showed in the brief time in the game.
That leaves four players on Yanu who still haven't won a challenge. In many cases, losing members early can be addition by subtraction, but in this case, that may still not be enough. The only player who seems to be playing a good game is Q, but his allies aren't that steady, and it's apparent he knows it.
This tribe has not shown a single skill in challenges. Still, it only takes the right challenge and for some breaks to go their way for them to find their stride.
It would be surprising if Yanu is cohesive enough to end their losing streak, but who knows. Maybe they'll surprise us. More likely, they'll lose again, and next week, they'll shuffle the tribal deck into three-five-player tribes.
