How many episodes of Survivor have there been?
With the finale of Survivor 50, there have been 727 episodes of Survivor. As most seasons average between 13-16 episodes a season, there’s officially been more episodes of Survivor than we’d had unique castaways—even when there are more castaways each season than episodes.
How many total castaways have competed across all seasons?
As of Survivor 50, a total of 751 unique castaways have played Survivor with 15.9% of them categorized as returning players. We’ve seen 89 players return for a second season, 20 for a third season, 8 for a fourth season, and 3 players have competed in five seasons of Survivor: Boston Rob Mariano, Cirie Fields, and Ozzy Lusth.
How many different countries has Survivor filmed in?

- Thailand: season 5
- Brazil: seasons 6 & 18
- Panama: seasons 7, 8, & 12

How many hosts has Survivor had since 2000?
Just one legendary host over 50 seasons: Jeff Probst! Though there was a time when Jeff nearly quit, but was instead given more responsibility and sway in the production, eventually becoming showrunner. That means that not only do we see him every week on our television screens, but he’s the boss out in Fiji when a season is in production.
How many seasons have featured returning players?
Technically, there have been 15 seasons with returning players included, though I personally only recognize 14 of them—as I don’t count Bruce Perreault as an actual returning player when he was medevaced during the marooning challenge in Survivor 44 and never actually played the game. All the other returning player seasons have featured anywhere between two returning castaways and a full roster.
Who holds the record for most immunity challenge wins in a single season?
Back in Survivor: The Australian Outback, Colby Donaldson set the record for most immunity challenge wins in a single season with five. This broke the record of four, set just one season before in Survivor: Borneo by Kelly Wiglesworth. So the show now hosts two different halls of fame for winners: the male winners, and the female winners. If a woman hits four challenge wins in a season, she joins the history books. Same for a man with five.
Because of this distinction, we have two metrics for the all-time record list with a total of 12 players setting and tying the record:
- Colby Donaldson (Survivor: The Australian Outback) - 5
- Tom Westman (Survivor: Palau) - 5
- Terry Deitz (Survivor: Panama) - 5
- Ozzy Lusth (Survivor: Cook Islands) - 5
- Mike Holloway (Survivor: Worlds Apart) - 5
- Brad Culpepper (Survivor: Game Changers) - 5
- Kelly Wiglesworth (Survivor: Borneo) - 4
- Jenna Morasca (Survivor: The Amazon) - 4
- Kim Spradlin (Survivor: One World) - 4
- Chrissy Hofbeck (Survivor: Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers) - 4
- Rachel LaMont (Survivor 47) - 4
- Savannah Louie (Survivor 49) - 4
50% of these record holders went on to win the season they tied the record in while 91%—all but one—landed a spot at Final Tribal Council
How many times has the Survivor Auction taken place?
There have been 18 Survivor Auctions over the last 50 seasons with only three taking place in the new era. Before its resurgence on Survivor 45, the last old era auction took place in season 30, Survivor: Worlds Apart. Jeff Probst has previously said that they stopped the auction due to players no longer participating—only holding onto their money in the hopes that an advantage would come out in the end.
But the new format changed that by implementing a twist that makes it imperative for players to spend their money. The person at the end of the auction with the most money leftover loses their vote at the upcoming Tribal Council. Though that was only instituted in Survivor 45 and Survivor 47 while Survivor 50 a MrBeast-sized twist instead.
How many winners received every vote at Final Tribal Council?
There are only five winners in Survivor history who have received every single juror vote:
- Earl Cole: 9-0-0 (Survivor: Fiji)
- J.T. Thomas: 7-0 (Survivor: Tocantins)
- John Cochran: 8-0-0 (Survivor: Caramoan)
- Jeremy Collins: 10-0-0 (Survivor: Cambodia)
- Adam Klein: 10-0-0 (Survivor: Millennials vs. Gen X)
Even more impressive, J.T. and Cochran are the only two winners who received every juror vote after receiving zero votes their entire game. Fans consider both of these wins to be “a perfect game.”
How many immunity idols have been found since they debuted?
There have been exactly 179 idols found as of the end of Survivor 50. 27% of those were found in the new era, but the seasons that had the most idols found happened back in the old era. Both Survivor: Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers and Survivor: Island of the Idols contained nine found hidden immunity idols.
But Survivor: Cambodia holds the record for the most successful idols played with four—Kelley “does not count” Wentworth counted towards two of those, becoming the first player to successfully play two idols in one season. She also holds the record for most votes negated with an idol, with nine.
How many different tribe Buff colors have been used?
Over the past 50 seasons, there have been 9 main colors of Buffs to represent 179 tribes (including starting tribes and merged tribes). Though each season the exact shades of each tribe’s colors vary slightly, from a general standpoint, the show has used orange, yellow/gold, green, blue/teal, red, magenta, purple, black, and brown to differentiate tribes each season.
Blue is the most used color of Buff (with 18% of tribes represented by blue/teal), but yellow is the color most associated with winners (20% of winners started on a yellow tribe).
What is the highest number of times a player has been voted out?
In a single season, the most times a player has been voted out is three with Ozzy Lusth in Survivor: South Pacific. With Redemption Island in play, Ozzy was voted out at the start of the game, only to earn himself a spot at the merge, getting back in the game by winning the first round of Redemption Island duels. Then after getting voted off a second time, he survived Redemption Island yet again, earning his way to the Final Five. An immunity win kept him to the Final Four, but then losing the final immunity challenge earned him a third snuffed torch of the season and a seat on the jury.
Because of this—and the fact he’s only made it to the end once—Ozzy also holds the career record of most times voted out in Survivor history with six eliminations over five seasons.
How many immunity challenges have ended in a tie?
In the U.S. version of the show, there’s only been one time a challenge ended in a draw. During the “Last Gasp” immunity challenge in Survivor 43, players held themselves under a steel grate at the surface of the Fijian ocean. As the tide rose, breathing would become more and more difficult, forcing players to swim out from under the bars, forfeiting the challenge. This challenge has taken place in three prior seasons, but in an unprecedented turn of events, both Owen Knight and Karla Cruz Godoy outlasted the tide.
As the tide began to lower, nullifying the challenge, Jeff Probst called it and declared both castaways the winner.
How many players have used the shot in the dark successfully?
Since the shot in the dark was introduced back in Survivor 41, it’s been utilized 19 times—at least once in every new era season except for Survivor 49. However, it’s only been revealed as “Safe” three times, with only two of those instances effectively nullifying votes against the player who used it.
Survivor 45’s Kaleb Gebrewold was the first to achieve this feat when he played his shot in the dark at the Final 12, nervous for his safety in the game. After Jeff Probst declared Kaleb safe, we went on to discover that all 11 votes in the urn had Kaleb’s name on it. As he didn’t place a vote in order to play his shot in the dark, this effectively made Kaleb the first player in history to receive every single vote at a Tribal Council.
Then, again in Survivor 48, Mary Zheng was deemed safe on a tribe of four, negating a 2-0 vote due to her lack of a vote and Justin Pioppi losing his vote on a journey.

How many players have been medically evacuated?
There have been 21 evacuations across 15 different seasons of the show with only one of those instances not being for a personal medical reason, but for a family member’s medical emergency—Terry Dietz in Survivor: Cambodia was called to leave by doctors as his son required an immediate heart transplant.
The most medical evacuations to happen in Survivor history took place during Survivor: Kaoh Rong when three castaways—Caleb Reynolds, Neal Gottlieb, and Joe del Campo—were medevaced all at different points in the season. Before that, Survivor: Micronesia, Survivor: Samoa, Survivor: One World, and Survivor: Caramoan all featured two medical evacuations, but every other time was only one castaway per season.
How much money has been presented to winners since 2000?
Across 50 seasons of Survivor, the winners have been awarded a collective $52 million. All but two seasons featured a $1 million prize, but the last two milestone anniversary seasons—Survivor: Winners at War and Survivor 50—both ultimately gave away $2 million to the winners.
In addition to the $1 million prize, all castaways are given a $10,000 appearance fee for being present at the live finale. Since there have only been 40—technical—live finales, that ends with a total of $52.4 million going to 48 unique winners, but not distributed equally amongst them.
How many seasons have had a tiebreaker vote at Final Tribal Council?
Only once in all of Survivor history has a Final Tribal Council resulted in a deadlock tie between two players that forced the third member of the Final Three to become the final jury member and place their vote for a winner. In Survivor: Ghost Island, players and fans alike were shocked when Jeff Probst said he was going to read the votes at Final Tribal Council rather than at the live reunion show.
This count revealed a 5-5-0 tie between Wendell Holland and Domenick Abbate, forcing the third place finisher, Laurel Johnson, to take on the role of juror at Final Tribal Council and place her vote for the Sole Survivor.
How many loved ones have appeared on the show for visits?
There have been 35 seasons that combined featured over 250 in-person visits from players’ loved ones. Some seasons included loved ones surprising their castaways on rewards while others included challenges the loved ones had to win in order to spend additional quality time with their player. The most memorable, of course, was on Survivor: Winners at War when 24 loved ones—the most in Survivor history—came out and got to spend the day with their castaway, no challenge win required. In addition, the players out on the Edge of Extinction also got visits from 15 of their loved ones.
How many fake immunity idols have been played?
The first fake immunity idol appeared in season 11, Survivor: Guatemala, and was made by Gary Hogeboom. Since then, there have been 38 instances of players utilizing something in the hopes of fooling their tribe mates into believing they—or their target—had a real hidden immunity idol. But only 10 of those “idols” were actually played at Tribal Council.
With all productions since season 33 filming on the same beaches in Fiji, there was once an unaired occurrence of someone finding a fake idol that had been hidden during a previous season. Zeke Smith made a fake idol during Survivor: Millennials vs. Gen X which was never found until the following season, Survivor: Game Changers, when Ozzy Lusth happened upon it. Thankfully, Zeke and Ozzy were allies both looking for idols together, so when Ozzy showed him the idol, Zeke immediately revealed it was his fake from the prior season.
How many players have been voted out, but returned to the game in the same season?
There have been six seasons that included some kind of twist allowing ousted players a chance to return to the game. From Survivor: Pearl Islands Outcast twist to Redemption Island and Edge of Extinction, 11 players have had their torches snuffed, but went on to earn a spot back in the game. Additionally, the Edge of Extinction twist on seasons 38 and 40 allowed multiple pre-merge eliminated players to join the jury.
How many people apply to be on Survivor every year?
Every year, around 30,000 people apply to be on Survivor. Whether it’s through the online audition form or an in-person casting call, tens of thousands of people hear the call of Jeff Probst urging them to “apply now” and actually do! This means in the show’s history there’s probably been more than 1,000,000 people who’ve applied to be a $1 million winner.
