The nominations are in and the Television Critics Association has listed Survivor as a contender this year for Outstanding Achievement in Reality at the 42nd annual TCA Awards. The show has previously been nominated for this award five times, but the last was nine years ago in 2017.
But after the turbulent, milestone season that Survivor 50 was—and even the incredible editing in Survivor 49 earlier this year—we completely agree that our favorite series deserves the recognition.
Survivor was nominated next to seven other incredible reality programs, including The Traitors, which many Survivor alum have gone on to do—and which won the TCA Award in this category the last two years. Full list of nominations below:
- Couples Therapy (Showtime/Paramount+)
- Finding Mr. Christmas (Hallmark)
- The Great British Baking Show (Netflix)
- Love on the Spectrum (Netflix)
- RuPaul’s Drag Race (MTV)
- Survivor (CBS)
- Top Chef (Bravo)
- The Traitors (Peacock)
The awards are set to air later this summer and we’ll, of course, be rooting on our personal favorite reality show, as always!
But Survivor has had an interesting relationship with awards shows since its debut in May of 2000. The show has received seven prior TCA Awards nominations including “Outstanding New Program” and “Program of the Year” back in 2001. They’ve also been nominated for five Critics’ Choice Awards as well as a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Reality Program, which they won back in 2018 specifically after an incredibly important episode of Survivor: Game Changers.
In addition to the above, Survivor has received 72 total Emmy nominations—including four just this last year—and has taken home the win seven times. One of the wins was “Outstanding Cinematography for Reality Program” for the first episode of the 10th anniversary season, Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains, “Slay Everyone, Trust No One.”
It also received the “Outstanding Picture Editing for a Structured or Competition Reality Program” nomination back in 2020 for Survivor: Winners at War episode 2, “It's Like a Survivor Economy."
While we won’t know if Survivor 50 will receive any special recognition—like its preceding returning player anniversary seasons—until July 8 when this year’s Emmy nominations are announced, Variety has predicted that the show will win “Host for Reality/Competition Program”— with Jeff Probst at the helm—and “Competition Program” on top of a “Picture Editing (Structured Reality/Competition)” win for the overall series body of work.
They also predict Survivor will be nominated for “Casting for a Reality Program” and “Cinematography (Reality)” which they have previously received nominations for two and 21 times, respectively.
Considering the show hasn’t received an Emmy win since 2011, we can’t wait to see how things unfold this award season considering it’s been such a monumental year for the reality show giant.
