How Survivor should bring back the David vs. Goliath theme in the new “open” era

As we enter a new, new era of Survivor, there are a few themes fans would love to see again—with some minor updates.

After the dynamic Survivor: David vs. Goliath trio of Christian Hubicki, Angelina Keeley, and Mike White reunited on our screens for Survivor 50, we of course had to do a rewatch of the iconic season. And let me tell you, it still holds up as one of the best seasons in Survivor history.

The cast was perfect—not a single player we didn’t enjoy watching—the strategy was dynamic, and the social game was a true reflection of the human experience. There were so many memorable moments throughout the season—”Natalie, can I have your jacket?”—that we still haven’t let go of, so it definitely ranks high on the list of all-time greats.

And while the new era of Survivor hasn’t been focused on “themes” like it used to be—In the Hands of the Fans aside—as Jeff Probst teased the new “open” era of Survivor during the latest finale, we can’t help but wonder (hope!) if themes might be part of this new combo era of the game, where old school and new era production combines. And if it does, what themes would the show revisit?

Obviously Fans vs. Favorites and Blood vs. Water were huge seasons, mostly centered around returning players. But what about a season with all new players that still epitomized the idea of a battle of wits without necessarily categorizing players by fan status, appearance, or relation.

Based on the themes that naturally arose during Survivor 50, what if the show leaned into a season dedicated to Honor vs. Chaos. A modern day David vs. Goliath mixed with a little bit of Heroes vs. Villains in a more new era social game setting. We could have half the players entering the game with the intention of upholding promises and never lying while the other half of the castaways are ready to lie, cheat, and steal to get ahead.

The twist? Combine all players on both tribes. So instead of nine honor players on a tribe vs. nine chaos players. We have three tribes of six evenly split up between the two archetypes. No one knows who is entering the game as what kind of player—relationships will have to be forged in order for that information to come out.

Then, we might see some honor players become disloyal and some chaos players building true alliances, just like how some Davids had to become cutthroat and some Goliaths had to learn to blend in. And of course, production would elicit some twists that either encourage playing both honorably and chaotically. Players never know if the advantage they have will help them play their true game or if they’ll have to go against their values to move ahead.

I think it could be a lot of fun to see something like that unfold, but what do you think? What season themes would you like to see back in this “open era” of Survivor?
