In Survivor, there is a key difference between the cunning strategists who take on the villainous personas in order to play against the “heroes” of a season and the truly toxic, arrogant players who think shutting down their tribemates is the best way to move forward in the game.
Today, we’re talking about the former. About the “love to hate” agents of chaos who sometimes come up with strategies that, in the moment, other players feel cross the line, but the fans at home are praising the genius of for seasons to come. Some root for them, most root against them, but either way, the season would be boring without them.

With his iconic delusional, melodramatic, and hilariously self-important vibes, fans are always happy to see Coach show up for an episode or two. Longer than that and things start to get a little too much even for the purposes of entertainment. From nicknaming himself the “Dragon Slayer” in his first season to becoming the master of haikus in his latest season, watching his lofty ideals collide with actual game paranoid is peak comedy until his hypocrisy turns into overbearing territory.
“Chaos” Kass McQuillen
Survivor: Cagayan, Survivor: Cambodia
Kass is the ultimate strategic troll in the best way possible. She is incredibly smart and logical and knows exactly how to blow up everyone else’s game—and takes extreme delight in doing it most of the time. Her willingness to flip the entire board in Cagayan made her the player everyone loved voting into Cambodia just to yell at their TV screens for.
Abi-Maria Gomes
Survivor: Philippines, Survivor: Cambodia
If you crossed Abi-Maria—or even if she just thought you were capable of crossing her—you immediately made her hit list with no possibility for redemption. Her volatility and unfiltered camp presence created non-stop, unpredictable drama across her seasons, both of which she was the 7th member of the jury. So while she might have been a nuclear feud waiting to happen, she also knew how to get far.

Survivor 46, Survivor 50: In the Hands of the Fans
In his first season, Q piloted himself on one of the most unsettling rollercoasters in the show’s history that by the end of his run fans weren’t quite sure whether or not he even knew he was on Survivor. He went from dismantling his own alliance, to throwing his no. 1 ally under the bus, to offering to quit, to trying to sell an upcycled sweatshirt, to going home with an idol in his pocket. His erratic, high-pressure style drove his tribemates wild, but kept viewers on the edge of their seats.
Philip Sheppard
Survivor: Redemption Island, Survivor: Caramoan
The self-proclaimed “Former Federal Agent” and leader of Stealth R Us was beloved by fans for running around camp in his bright pink underwear, giving codenames to allies, and clashing with nearly everyone. While Philip was exhausting to basically all of his tribemates, his paranoia was actually spot on almost 100% of the time. His antics were absurd and polarizing, but goodness were they entertaining.
