What season of Survivor are we on?

For newcomers to the series, it might get a little confusing to keep up with everything. Especially after the promotion surrounding last season’s celebratory milestone. Was it the 25th anniversary? Was it the 50th season? Was it both?

So to our newSurvivorfriends, welcome! Here’s everything you need to know about where we are inSurvivor, what’s coming next, and what you should look back on to best understand the lore around the long-running series.

When didSurvivorfirst premiere?

Survivorfirst hit screens onMay 31, 2000when a group of 16 strangers from all walks of life embarked on the inaugural adventure of a lifetime. Facing up to 39 days in the jungles of Borneo, these castaways had to navigate a completely new playing field and essentially build a game from scratch as they were provided very minimal outlines for how to approach the game that first season.

Because season 1 wasn’t really a game the way it is today. It was a social experiment ending with one player getting $1 million. But along the way, those castaways learned how to work the system to guarantee success.

And now it’s been 25 years with approximately 2 seasons a year since it aired, which has us atSurvivor 50: In the Hands of the Fans, the latest anniversary season celebrating the history of the show including the players, the fans, and more. Having just wrapped that up, we are now looking towards the future ofSurvivor, which has us entering a completely new era.

What’s next forSurvivor?

We’re all counting down asSurvivor 51is set to premiere on Wednesday, September 23. This season is monumental because we’re going from the “new era” of gameplay introduced inSurvivor 41to whatJeff Probstand the show are calling the “open era,” basically opening up opportunities for elements of games past to enter the newest rendition of the game.

While we know the game will likely stick to the 26-day, 90-minute episode format we’ve gotten to know over the last 10 seasons, there’s much more potential for old school lore to be referenced on the island.

Things like Exile Island, Redemption Island, Ghost Island, Island of the Idols,Edge of Extinctionare all on the table for what’s to come next. And if you have no idea what any of that means, don’t worry. If they do enter the arena of gameplay, you’ll see plenty of clips and past references to understand the importance of each of them within the context of the new season.

But if you’re looking to do a little recon into past seasons before jumping into the upcoming season, you’re in the right place!

What seasons should I watch first?

The best part ofSurvivoris that there’s really no requirement to watch other seasons first. Each season is its own game and you really don’t need to know too much about what came before to enjoy it for what it is. However, I will say, there isa lotof lore when it comes to this series that you might hear players referencing now and then. Especially on returning player seasons likeSurvivor 50just was, there might be some context you want to have going into it.

But by no means does that mean you need to plot out the next six weeks to figure out how to schedule watch time for 50 seasons worth of episodes. That’s somewhere around 700 episodes, many of which aren’t necessary to understand thegeneral loreof the game.

These 14 seasons are the best condensed path to understanding the new “open era” before it begins. Although, we really don’t know exactly what’s going to happen when it premieres because anything fromSurvivorseasons past is up for grabs.

But overall, the above seasons will help you learn enough about the show’s history to understand any elements that might be thrown into the mix in the upcoming era.
