In a blink-or-you-miss-it moment, a glimpse of an Immunity Challenge for Survivor Ghost Island’s finale was teased in its very first preview last year.
Update: What looked to be a clear-cut Final Immunity Challenge seems to be at the Final Six, not Final Four. Survivor Ghost Island bucks tradition by not having their big finale episode challenge close out the season.
Original: The best part about rewatching seasons of Survivor is noticing the editing techniques and how things like a pathetic fallacy, animal imagery or mimicking things in nature to reflect that of the players complement the storytelling. There are so many subtle details that you’ll miss if you’re not paying attention to them.
So far, I can’t recall the show ever teasing the finale content of season that far ahead, as it usually lets the audience know part of who makes it to the end of the game. However, CBS wanted to reverse the curse of their past season previews and decided to say, “Hey, why not show off one of the final challenges of Survivor Ghost Island in our first official preview of the season?”
That’s right, during the Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers reunion, Jeff Probst did his usual tease for the next season, teeing up the first Survivor Ghost Island promo. Not only did we get teases of idols, trinkets and mistakes from past players and seasons, but we got a barrage of images sped up in fast motion.
Right near the end, in the burst of images you can see, is a skull maze. In it is a multitude of colored walls, each with their own square segment and a platform to collect something on. The image cuts off, but there’s likely something to do that’s not visible from this angle.
Considering the synopsis for the Survivor Ghost Island finale suggests the castaways will be “facing the biggest maze in the history for the game,” (bad grammar aside), this skull maze looks to be exactly what they’ll face. Go through a series of obstacles, get to the square sections in the middle to collect objects for the last puzzle to solve right as the challenge comes to a close.

It goes to show that even in the teaser, you should always be paying attention to your surroundings. You’ll never know what you’ll catch a sneak peek of down the line!
