A surprise blindside sent the “Godfather” of Survivor: David vs. Goliath packing. In his post-game interviews, Carl reveals interesting details about what went down that night.

A common trend in Survivor is when castaways are blindsided after becoming confident about their position in the game. Their control and power get to their head, unaware of the target they are putting on themselves.

Examples of these castaways include Chris Noble from Ghost Island, Will Wahl from Millennials vs. Gen X, and Ozzy way back in Micronesia. It’s safe to say we can add Carl to this list. He did a brilliant job of keeping the Davids together, but he got a little too comfortable with who he shared his plans with. Carl discussed his gameplay with RHAP and Entertainment Weekly, revealing some interesting thoughts.

Carl was more pissed at Christian for flipping than Gabby. When Carl told Christian the plan to vote out Alison, he expected Christian to stick David strong. He thought because they saved Christian in back to back tribals that he wouldn’t flip on the Davids so soon.

Looking back, he would have spent more time convincing Christian on the vote. The one thing that Carl would’ve done differently was to cement Christian’s relationship with the Davids. Carl wished he got someone who had a tighter bond with Christian, like Nick, to persuasively explain why Alison had to go.

Carl calls out Jeff for the 11-letter word challenge. During Carl’s last Immunity Challenge, the castaways were looking to form an 11-letter word to win the necklace. Carl was the first one to form a word: “perceptions”, however that wasn’t the right word!

Carl was fine with the fact that production had a different word in mind. He was more upset with Probst for saying the word out loud, as Carl felt that Jeff’s comments gave everyone else an idea to what the actual word was. He said that he eventually clued into the word being perspective, but Alison and Davie were quicker at removing and replacing their blocks.

Carl addressed his alliance ahead of time that he would step down from a challenge for food. So it wasn’t a shocker to the Davids that he didn’t take part in the nearly six-hour Immunity Challenge in order to feast on nachos and beer. He told the Davids ahead of time and they were ok with it.

It was also interesting to note that Carl had no clue people were calling him the Godfather. He felt that the Davids made their decisions together but he wasn’t going to scramble on the beach to get everyone’s opinion privately. And yes, Carl knew he was wasted after the Reward Challenge and does slightly regret it, but he got caught in the moment and felt that he wasn’t the only one who drank too much!
