Survivor Winners at War: Understanding the Fire Tokens twist
The new Fire Tokens twist in Survivor: Winners at War will work differently than first expected, having a direct connection with Edge of Extinction.
Jeff Probst sat down with Entertainment Weekly to explain the thought process behind Fire Tokens. He mentioned how production is always thinking of ways to expand this island society, and Jeff believes this new twist will bring that trading and bartering aspect to the show. There are still a few details we won’t fully understand about Fire Tokens until Survivor: Winners at War begins, but we have a much clearer understanding now. Here are some key Fire Token rules that Jeff Probst highlighted.
How castaways can earn tokens
To begin the season, each castaway will start off one token. When a tribe member is voted out, they will be forced to give their tokens to another player. Probst didn’t definitively reveal another way castaways still in the game can receive tokens, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s some hidden at each camp, or if they can be earned as part of a Reward Challenge.
Connection to Edge of Extinction
Similar to season 38, players on the Edge of Extinction will be able to find advantages that they can’t use for themselves. The difference is that they won’t be simply willing it to a player of their choice. They can’t use the advantages they find, but they can make use of Fire Tokens. In Winners at War, the Edge of Extinction residents will be seeking to trade their advantages to players still in the game in exchange for Fire Tokens.
The castaways still in the game want secret advantages to better their position, while the Edge of Extinction residents want the tokens to buy an advantage that could help them re-enter the game. Jeff mentioned that the castaways on the Edge won’t be filled in on how many tokens everyone has. They will have to guess and hope the person they make an offer to has the resources to pay for it. Probst also said that these offers would be sent privately and most likely anonymously.
Castaways can use their Fire Tokens together
When someone still in the game is offered an advantage, they will have a limited time to come up with the tokens, otherwise, the deal is off. If they don’t have enough tokens to pay for the advantage themselves, then they could ask other players to pitch in. This is where this twist could get very interesting. The prospect of sharing tokens brings rise to another layer of strategy.

Will that castaway let their alliance know about this proposed advantage to see if they could keep this news among allies? Could they use it as a way to build trust with someone they want to work with? Or maybe it could be used as a ploy to put a target on someone’s back or to bankrupt a castaway who has the most tokens. This aspect of sharing tokens is the most promising part of this twist, adding another social dynamic to this stacked season.
Other items Fire Tokens can buy
Don’t expect Survivor to break out a board game twist and not provide a variety of ways this currency can be spent. Besides bartering for advantages, Fire Tokens can be used to purchase a variety of resources at any challenge. Thanks to Entertainment Weekly’s coverage, here’s a list of items that will be up for sale at the start of the season.
Food:
- Coffee and pastries – 3 tokens
- A small bag of beans – 4 tokens
- A regular bag of rice – 5 tokens
Comfort:
- Two pillows and two blankets – 4 tokens
- A tarp – 5 tokens
Advantages:
- An advantage in a challenge – 4 tokens
It will be exciting to watch how Fire Tokens impact the complexity and flow of the game. It’s certainly a risky twist to attempt when casting is finally able to put together a full group of winners. We can only hope that this Survivor twist will find that balance between adding a new spin to the show without directly affecting the results of the season.
