The Survivor 50 premiere, "Epic Party," didn't end like one. Kyle Fraser, the winner of Survivor 48 and one of the most beloved Survivor players of the new era, was pulled from the game by Jeff Probst and Dr. Joe on Day 4 after tearing his Achilles in the immunity challenge one day earlier.
We saw a brief look at the Vatu tribe talking with Kyle and saying their tearful goodbyes. It appears Survivor 50 episode 2, "Therapy Carousel," begins right after Kyle's final moments on the beach, thanks to a sneak peek at the new episode from CBS.
In the episode, Genevieve Mushaluk, the sole representative from Survivor 47 and member of Kyle's tribe and alliance, breaks down in a confessional and tries to explain what it's like to see someone you care about, and who seemingly cares about you, leave the game.
"In a game where you can just trust no one, Kyle just felt like home and warmth and security," Genevieve said. "And, out here, you are so vulnerable and scared, which is how Survivor makes you feel. And so, what might seem like a totally crazy, emotional response — I get it, totally, from the outside looking in — it's a lot when you're sitting right here."
"I feel so guilty thinking about the game implications," Genevieve continued. "Like, what does this mean for me? Like, what a crazy thing to say."
You can watch Genevieve's full confessional in the sneak peek from episode 2.
That's such an interesting perspective from Genevieve. It reminds me of, like, how teammates must feel when an athlete goes down with an injury, even a serious injury, and the game just continues.
Genevieve clearly hurts for Kyle. You don't ever want to see someone pulled from the game in this fashion. We all know how long it takes to recover from injuries like the one Kyle sustained, but it's also super emotional because there's still the game to play. And, Survivor absolutely kicks your butt, no matter who you are. Sure, everyone might catch a break every once in a while, but it gets everyone eventually.
Like, Genevieve is clearly battling with also feeling bad for herself because of Kyle's absence. She was in an alliance with Kyle, Colby Donaldson, and Stephenie LaGrossa Kendrick. Well, within one day, Kyle is gone and out of the game, and Colby doesn't have a vote after losing it to Savannah Louie on the journey. Now, Genevieve may be on the wrong side of a 4-2 split right now.
And, I'm not comparing Genevieve's pain in the game to Kyle's torn Achilles, but this game is just a whirlwind.
On top of that, you've just seen a friend and play leave the game. It's a lot to ask these players to continue to put their bodies, minds, and reputations on the line in such an unforgiving game. Obviously, they've all signed up to be out there, you know? They want to win, but at the end of the day, there's always that human aspect of the game that you can't take out.
I don't expect this to be the first big tears we see in confessionals this season. There's no denying that Survivor 50 is going to test these players in a way that we haven't seen in a long time.
Watch Survivor 50 episode 2, "Therapy Caroussel," on Wednesday, March 4 at 8 p.m. ET on CBS and Paramount+.
