The Survivor 50 cast was announced in May before they left for Fiji to film the historic season. Jeff Probst has been talking about the Survivor 50 cast for even longer than that, and now, he's clearing up a misconception about the upcoming season.

In a new interview with TV Insider, Probst shared that casting Survivor 50 wasn't about the "legends." Instead, it was capturing a little of everything in a cast, celebrating all 49 previous seasons of the show.

Here's what Probst told TV Insider:

"What we were looking for is people that we thought could fit into what we knew we were building for 50, which was this composite of our entire history. I think that’s one thing that maybe a lot of fans aren’t really clear on. This is not a season that was going to be categorized by words like 'legends' or any other thing. It was simply, if you look at 25 years ofSurvivor, let’s try to taste a little of all of that."

At first, when we heard about Survivor 50, I think all fans thought that they were going to bring back all of the legends, winners and non-winners, to try to capture 49 seasons of the great series. Obviously, that's a super ambitious task. There are just too many important players in Survivor history. Everyone wants to see their favorites return, and that just wasn't possible.

Instead, as Probst claims, they tried to build a kind of smorgasbord of characters and personalities to deliver a great season. Looking at the cast, I don't know if they accomplished exactly that, but there are more than enough fan-favorites from older eras, players who never had the chance to play twice, and new era players to make things more than interesting. It's going to be a great season, but I think we can all agree that the cast wasn't exactly what we are all hoping for. There are some players we wanted to see who were left at home, and there are some players who are playing that we didn't really want to see. That's just how it goes.

Probst was responding to a question about how they chose the two players from Survivor 49 to join the Survivor cast when he shared that answer. It's clear that those two players impressed the casting team to earn a spot on one of the biggest seasons in the show's history. We still don't officially know who those Survivor 49 players are that will be on Survivor 50, but we'll likely find out soon.

"And so the players we were looking for in Survivor 49 would be the essence of the new era," Probst continued. "And the essence of the new era is a faster, more dangerous style of gameplay. What we look for is players who are willing to play this game to win. And that’s very different from playing to not lose."

That's obviously good news! We love players who don't sit back and wait. We want to see players who are committed to winning and to playing the game. That's one thing I will say about the Survivor 50 cast. The players they chose are not players who just sit back and wait for the game to develop. They build relationships, make connections, try to make bold moves, and leave their mark on the game. It's definitely going to be very interesting to see how it all plays out!

We have one season to watch before that, though! Survivor 49 premieres on Wednesday, Sept. 24. It airs weekly on Wednesdays throughout the fall. Then, Survivor 50 premieres sometime in February 2026.
