Despite Survivor 49 premiering on CBS next month, everyone wants to talk about Survivor 50, even Jeff Probst, who just shared the reasoning for bringing back one of the biggest recent Survivor stars, Mike White.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Probst talked at length about the decision to include White in Survivor 50.
"He’s arguably the single best storyteller we’ve ever had on Survivor. Mike is one of the most peculiar and loving people I’ve ever met. He’s so authentic. He does exactly what he wants on his terms, and the results clearly speak for themselves. And honestly, I’m grateful to consider him a friend, because I learn from Mike every day. You’re talking about one of the best of all time, and the fact that he said yes to Survivor still brings a smile on my face.”
Probst also highlighted that the question is not and should not be about why they cast White for Survivor 50 or why CBS wanted him to return. It's all about why White, at the height of his career as creator, showrunner, writer, and director of The White Lotus, wanted to return to play Survivor.
That's probably the most interesting aspect to me, as well. White, who is in between seasons of The White Lotus, could be pitching other projects, lining up other deals, or getting to work immediately on the next season of the HBO series, which was ordered a long time ago. Instead, he's competing to win Survivor 50. That's fascinating.
Probst echoed that question in the interview.
“I’m surprised people aren’t asking, ‘Why is one of the greatest writers in the history of Hollywood so interested in Survivor?’ What is it that Mike is learning about humans and behavior and situational ethics that he applies to his craft? Because I think that’s part of why he does it — he’s out there in a real incubator of human behavior where you never know what’s going to happen, but what you do know is that if you show up to play Survivor, you can study it."
When the full Survivor 50 cast was announced in May, right before filming started, most fans were shocked to see White involved for all the reasons Probst mentioned, but I'm definitely excited to see White return. I've been a huge fan of his since I was a kid. When he played Survivor the first time, in season 37, Survivor: David vs. Goliath, White delivered some of the show's most iconic moments. There's a strong argument that White actually deserved that epic season, but he finished runner-up to Nick Wilson on a 7-3-0 vote, with White receiving three votes and Angelina Keeney receiving none.
Now, White has a second chance to win Survivor and cement his legacy as one of the best Survivor players of all time. How good of a chance does White actually have? Well, it depends on who you ask! Boston Rob recently said White would have an advantage because of his celebrity status, because everyone wants a cameo on the next season of The White Lotus.
I don't know exactly how to feel about White's chances. On one hand, we all watched how dangerous of a player he can be the first time he played. He's probably the smartest person out there! That target on his back could be and probably should be huge. On the other hand, he's very charismatic. If he's able to form a few key connections, you truly never know how things will play out. My gut is telling me it won't end well for White this time, but there are so many variables and factors involved. I'm leaning toward one of the new era players winning Survivor 50, so unfortunately, I don't think it's White's turn to win Survivor.
We'll just have to wait and see how it all plays out! Survivor 50 will premiere in February 2026 following Survivor 49.
