Kamilla Karthigesu has played a strong game so far in Survivor 48. Her social and strategic chops have helped her navigate some very tough scenarios. While she started the game in a power alliance, she has played the majority of the game on the bottom, yet she has managed to keep her head above water and connect with enough people to keep her insulated from any real threat.

If Kamilla manages to make it to the end, she has a good argument to make for why she deserves the money. An underdog story often resonates with the jury, especially when they were players who were on the bottom with her. However, she first needs to get there, and then needs to do so against the right mix of players. So, what is Kamilla's path to the end?

Kamilla has built an impressive underdog resume

Welcome to the Party
“Welcome to the Party” – Tensions continue to rise among disagreeing alliance members. Concentration is key in this week’s individual immunity challenge. Then, a secretive midnight journey turns not so secretive when tribemates notice this player sneak out of camp, on SURVIVOR, Wednesday, April 23 (8:00-9:30 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and available to stream on Paramount+ (live and on-demand for Paramount+ with SHOWTIME subscribers, or on-demand for Paramount+ Essential

Kamilla has built quite a resume for herself in Survivor 48, despite lacking agency for a good portion of the game. While she started in the majority alliance on her original Civa starting tribe, they never lost a challenge to go to tribal council, and thus, the alliance did not ultimately have the chance to vote out a target.

Kamilla was in the toughest spot thus far when tribes swapped in episode 4. Kamilla and her original alliance member, Kyle Fraser, were swapped into a tribe with a trio that had been in a tight alliance from day one: Shauhin Davari, Thomas Krottinger, and Joe Hunter. It seemed like those three had all the power, but with incredible strategic maneuvering, social manipulation, and the use of two advantages, both Kyle and Kamilla managed to survive and send Thomas home.

The next time Kamilla appeared at Tribal Council was not until the "mergatory" and subsequent full merge. Since that time, a power alliance has been essentially running the game, one that she is only peripherally part of. She has essentially sat in the minority the majority of the game, but thanks to her social skills, it has not hurt her.

Why has she survived so well from the bottom? She is well-liked by the tribe and has not rubbed people the wrong way, something several other vote-outs had not been able to manage. However, the second reason is the bonds she has built. Her alliance with Kyle has managed to stay under the radar despite their clear ride or die connection. Kyle has put himself out there on multiple occasions to keep Kamilla in the loop and protect her from being a target.

It is not just Kyle that she formed a strong bond with, though. Despite the blindside she helped orchestrate on Thomas, both Joe and Shauhin managed to build bonds with her as well that have helped keep her off their radar. It may not be to the level of Kyle, but they are still good social connections to have. Add in her ability to be trusted by many underdog players as well, and it is clear Kamilla has played a strong, potentially winning game.

What needs to happen for Kamilla to win the game?

Power in the game is up for grabs when one castaway is chosen for a journey and must decide if the risk is worth the reward. The biggest challenge Kamilla will have to overcome to win is simply making it to the end of the game. As much as she may have bonds in the tribe right now, the fact of the matter is she is still outside of the strong four alliance of Eva Erickson, Kyle, Joe, and Shauhin. Even with Kyle protecting her, that is a 3-3 matchup at best, and Eva has an advantage at her disposal.

Therefore, Kamilla not only needs to convince Mitch Guerra to vote with her, but also Kyle AND Shauhin. That would make the vote 4-2, which they could split to flush Eva's idol and win a revote. That being said, that also requires beating Joe and Eva at immunity, which is not a guarantee. If she cannot flip the votes, it seems likely she would be the next target as a bigger threat than Mitch.

Kamilla's only other shot is to get the votes on Mitch, and then pull Kyle and Shauhin at Final Five. The problem is, this strategy is more flawed because it would force her to take both of them to the end. Both Shauhin and Kyle have also played strong games and have supporters on the jury, which makes it tough for her to pull out the win. She has a much better chance against Mitch and Kyle than she does against Shauhin and Kyle.

If she can manage to bring Kyle and Mitch to the Final Three, Kamilla could win the game. At that point, it would likely be a face-off between her and Kyle. The path to victory at that point is for her to convince the jury that he playing the underdog role and using Kyle as a shield was more impressive than him staying in the power alliance. If she manages that, she may secure the votes to win the game.

Ultimately, Kamilla's fate is tied to her social ability and persuasive skills in getting people on her side at the right time. It is possible they already missed their chance to have numbers, which is why getting to the end is the hardest piece of the puzzle. If she manages to survive, she likely will have ruffled fewer feathers and have a real shot at winning. Time will tell whether her path to victory becomes a reality.
