For the second season in a row, we might have a Survivor player break or tie an immunity challenge record! Joe Hunter of Survivor 48 is closing in on history after winning his third individual immunity in episode 10, "My Enemies Are Plottin'."
With potentially four immunity challenges left, Joe only needs to win two individual immunities to tie the record set by some Survivor legends, including Colby Donaldson, Tom Westman, Ozzy Lusth, Mike Holloway, and Brad Culpepper. Each of those players won five individual immunity challenges. In the new era, we haven't seen many players come close to winning five immunity challenges, but it has happened.
If Joe even wins three of the next four challenges, he will set the all-time record for individual immunity wins in one season on Survivor. While I don't think he's going to be around that long, Joe has a realistic chance to win every immunity challenge. We haven't seen him as a puzzlemaster yet. Those challenges are coming up, most likely, but he can't be counted out in any physical competition.
After David Kinne was voted out, it's clear that Joe is a pretty clear favorite in basically every challenge that involves some physical strength or endurance. So far, that's basically what the challenges have been. Will he be able to hold his own when there's that puzzle element? We've seen more dominant physical players slip up toward the end of the game.
Ultimately, I don't think Joe will win two of the last four immunity challenges to tie the record. It's definitely possible, and if he does, he should probably win this season. But, for me, Joe has to be one of the next two players voted out. There's no way Shauhin Davari and Kyle Fraser can keep him around much longer and risk him winning every single challenge. If Joe loses, I do think he'll be on the chopping block.
It's hard to remember someone as physically dominant on a recent season of Survivor as Joe. Oh, wait! No, it's not! Survivor 47 featured two players who each won four individual immunities: Kyle Ostwald and Rachel LaMont. Rachel, who went on to win Survivor 47, also tied the record for most wins by a woman in Survivor history. She won three of the last four immunity challenges to cement her victory.
That's probably what Joe is going to have to do to win Survivor 48. I'd be voting him out any chance I got in the next few Tribal Councils. We'll see what happens next time on Survivor 48!
