It's great to hear from Survivor alumni, especially those who played a while back, and to learn how they’re doing in their lives. However, not all updates are always good news, and unfortunately, this is one of those cases.

In early June of 2026, Survivor contestant Ken McNickle, also known as Ken Cole, shared on his Instagram page that he was recently diagnosed with cancer. While McNickle didn’t disclose the explicit details about his prognosis, he did share some insights about the process by which he was diagnosed, the early signs he ignored, and how important it is for people to get regular medical checks within their means in order to be as healthy as possible.

McNickle's post began, "So here we go… I deliberated for a while about whether to share or not but I ultimately decided to because I’m hoping this chapter in my story can help others. I’ve made some mistakes in the process and should have taken care of myself better and sooner. But, here we are."

McNickle also stated, "As I’ve said before, if you have a health concern, don’t sit on it. Get yourself checked. There’s no valid reason not to. Not one."

Written on several slides in the same post, McNickle added that the minute he heard his diagnosis was cancer, everything else became muted, as well as tons of questions started to pour in, such as, ”Why now? What did I do to deserve this? Why didn’t I come in sooner. After everything else, now this?”

While the thought of giving up did cross his mind, McNickle also stated that he has a support system helping him through the process, including his daughter and his partner. Therefore, the only option is to fight: ”I'm choosing optimism, health, happiness, and knowing that the spirit has me. And most importantly, I'm choosing love.”

McNickle played Survivor in 2016 during one of the show’s most memorable seasons, Millennials vs Gen X. He was part of the Gen X tribe, where he aligned with David Wright and Jessica Lewis. As the three outsiders of the main alliance, this trio stuck together throughout most of the game. McNickle also demonstrated his physical abilities during the season, winning four individual immunity challenges.

McNickle was able to reach the Final Tribal Council alongside Adam Klein and Hannah Shapiro, mostly due to McNickle blindsiding Wright at the Final Four. McNickle ultimately failed to own his gameplay, and in response, the jury unanimously voted for Klein to win the game.

In May 2026, it was also revealed that McNickle, alongside other Survivor alum, would be part of a new documentary, Surviving Reality, filmed in Peru. This documentary project was originally created by Reiman Bledsoe, formerly known as Spencer, and while not many details have been released yet, it is focused on "cultural immersion, medicine, and truth."

It is highly jarring to see anyone going through a diagnosis such as cancer, particularly after many former Survivor contestants have also dealt with this illness, including McNickle's former Gen X tribe mate, Sunday Burquest. Here’s hoping McNickle continues to receive as much support as possible from his community and fans, and that he has a speedy recovery as well.
