In a season intent on keeping to a game of "honor and integrity," it feels like we deviated from that plot many episodes ago and the more I hear those words come out of these players mouths, the less they mean—and I expect to hear them said way too many times in the upcoming finale.

But this week, one player felt that integrity restored while another decided it was time to put it on the back burner for the rest of the game. A $1 million move or mistake?

Spoilers for episode 12!

Letters from home light new fires in Survivor 48 episode 12

After a tight reward challenge, Shauhin Davari won the opportunity to go to the Sanctuary, enjoy a large meal, a good night's sleep, and his letters from home. He opted to bring his core four allies Joe Hunter and Kyle Fraser. This reward initiated a new round of gameplay for each other them that was definitely needed with the end in sight.

Joe's messages from his family reminded him of why he's out there—for his sister—and finally allowed him a chance to forgive himself for something that happened outside of the game, releasing a weight of grief that was holding him down and solidifying his dedication to his "honesty and integrity" gameplay.

Oppositely, it made Shauhin and Kyle realize they had to kick things into gear and start playing hard in order to secure a spot in the end that could actually win them the $1 million. Not only did it spark something in the players who received them, but it also became a driving force behind the move of the episode for Kamilla Karthigesu.

While the letters from home reward is often viewed within the game as a human moment—knowing how precious those messages are—and not as something people use for leverage, it makes sense why Shauhin would want to take Joe as the only father of the group. But from the perspective of the game, if they wanted a chance to take Joe out, he did not need the time to refuel that Shauhin gave him.

Joe has a chance to break a challenge record

After this week's win, Joe is just one more away from joining an elite group of players who have won 5 immunity challenges in a single season. But with two immunity challenges left and his drive clearly being restored after the letters from home, there's a huge possibility that he will not only tie that record, but break it and become the first player to win six immunity challenges in a season.

If that happens, he secures himself a spot in the Final Three and, considering everything we've heard from the jury, it would be very surprising if he didn't win the title of Sole Survivor.

Comparatively, Kyle has won 2 individual immunities this season, Kamilla and Eva Erickson have both won 1, and despite an early showing of physical prowess for the Civa tribe, Mitch has not (yet) secured an individual immunity win. Of course, of these four, Kyle and Kamilla have the added resume of major strategic gameplay, Kyle and Eva have played good social games, and all four have unlocked an advantage or two along the way.

It's truly all going to come down to a semi-unreadable jury this season.

Don't use a cautionary tale as your gameplay strategy

After Shauhin decided his new path forward was to fly too close to the sun and hope his wax wings didn't melt, it was clearly game over for him. There's a major difference between slamming your foot on the gas and building your strategy on a story meant to remind people not to go to the extreme. At least when you're speeding you have the chance to slow down if you need to redirect.

Kyle and Kamilla on the other hand did something very interesting by re-using a story they'd previously started laying out with David Kinne back in episode 7. This is the second time they've played the fake "Shauhin has an idol" card that has caused a member of the original Strong 5 to spiral and worry about who is actually being honest in a game of deception.

After three in-game days, it led to David's elimination when he came off as paranoid to the tribe and honestly, Joe's reaction to the information wasn't much different than David's. But our castaways don't have three days to spare to convince the tribe Joe has to go because of paranoia. Especially if he keeps winning challenges.

I'm worried now more than ever that this play is the beginning of the end for Kyle and Kamilla. Kamilla won't win against Kyle in the end due to his physical and social game. And Kyle needs that game-making move of blindsiding his biggest ally to have any chance of winning in the end. While everyone's expecting it to be Joe, it'd actually be Kamilla.

Next time on Survivor...

It's happening, people! The finale is nigh and my little heart is ready to explode from the excitement and anxiety of finding out who the winner of Survivor 48 is. And it really could be anyone's game depending on who ends up in the Final Three.

I don't expect to see Kyle and Kamilla there together and I'd be both surprised and not surprised to see Eva and Joe there together. I have a feeling Mitch won't make it, but right now it doesn't seem like any swords are aimed at him, so it's possible he'll slip under the radar and end up there simply because he wasn't a threat to anyone from a gameplay perspective—despite the fact that Joe was very threatened by him right after the merge.

We'll find out soon enough in the three-hour season finale this Wednesday at 8 pm ET on CBS and Paramount+.
