CBS has teased details of the first Survivor 49 finale challenge

On Dec. 17, TV Insider published a sneak peek at the Survivor 49 finale hours before the important episode is set to premiere. That article featured roughly one minute of footage from the finale's first challenge, which will decide which player will be guaranteed to be part of the final four. As that clip began, it became clear that a time-honored Survivor tradition will be returning during the finale. Jeff Probst is bringing the mud back!

As the teaser begins, there was excitement in the air as Kristina Mills, Rizo Velovic, Sage Ahrens-Nichols, Savannah Louie, and Sophi Balerdi prepared to get the challenge started. That energy is only compounded when Probst is shown signalling that the challenge has begun. Then, as the players were forcing their way through Survivor mud, which was made more difficult by the rope net that pushed them down, Probst launched into the kind of pep talk that can only be heard on Survivor.

“First, your good friend, the mud. Crawl through that mud! This is it right here! You want to get to four? Nothing is easy about this! That net is heavy. That mud is thick. It’s in your face, your eyes, you’re tasting it!”

To Probst's point, the muddy footage of the players looks like it would be miserable for them to be coping with.

Easily the most exciting part of the teaser has to be when it is shown that Mills became the second player to emerge from the mud. On the other end of the spectrum from Mills' triumph in that moment is what Balerdi seems to be going through as she expressed frustration at getting caught in the mud and the muddy net that covered it. “Oh my god, this is ridiculous." After those words can be heard, the tantalizing preview ends.

Survivor 49's finale premieres on CBS on Wednesday, Dec. 17, at 8/7c
