Considering the Final Four twist will happen during Survivor Ghost Island, one innocuous questions pitched to castaways could have season-long effects.
As the earliest returns of the open jury format suggest, players still adhere to some elements of the “outlast” section of the core Survivor tenets. Making a fire has never been more important for a season finalist, as Survivor Ghost Island will have 20 players vying for one of three possible Final Tribal Council spots with the possibility of building a fire to earn their seat.
That’s why one simple question offered up by ET Canada correspondent Erin Cebula could offer a hint of who may stumble at the end should they make it to the finale. Among a series of interviews (which are available on the ET Canada YouTube channel), one looks at whether or not players can make a fire. Although many attest they can, some needed special materials other than flint and some can’t do it at all.
You can check the video below, and we’ll follow up with the results of the informal quiz.
Of all the 20 Survivor Ghost Island players offered up this question, here is how the players break down:

Making Fire With Flint
- Libby Vincek
- Michael Yerger
- Sebastian Noel
- Morgan Ricke
- Chelsea Townsend
- Jacob Derwin
- Stephanie Gonzalez
- Wendell Holland
- Domenick Abbate
- Angela Perkins
- Brandon Shapiro

Making Fire With Flint Plus…
- Kellyn Bechtold (with flint and newspaper)
- James Lim (flint alone, also with sticks via YouTube)
- Bradley Kleihege (using his glasses)
- Stephanie Johnson (just bamboo sticks cut down with a machete)
Can’t Make Fire
- Laurel Johnson (didn’t practice, “I have 39 days to learn…”)
- Desiree Afuye (“I can learn.”)
- Donathan Hurley (“I’ve attempted, but not yet!”
There is more than 39 days’ worth of gameplay to make it to television (aka the entire Survivor Ghost Island season), but it is an interesting exercise to see how players prepare for the game as various levels of super fans. Laurel, Desiree and Donathan are decidedly students of the game from what we can tell from pre-game interviews, but to be able to make it to the island without being able to make a fire as someone who’s studied the game shows an interesting disparity.

As Ryan Ulrich proved last season, you don’t need to make fire at all to make it to the Final Tribal Council, but will the inability to make fire mean a potential loss of a million-dollar check? We’ll just have to watch the upcoming season to find out!
