Genevieve Mushaluk orchestrating Sol Yi's elimination in Survivor 47 looks worse each week
By Gerald Ng
In the game of Survivor, a bold move can cement a player's legacy, or send it spiraling. With each passing week, Genevieve Mushaluk's decision to orchestrate Sol Yi's elimination appears to be a giant miscalculation.
In Survivor 47 episode 11, Genevieve is once again left at the mercy of her tribemates.
How a 'huge move' backfired
At first glance, Genevieve rallying the troops to vote out Sol seems like a "big move" capable of garnering jury votes, a staple of the new era of Survivor. However, the move has not yielded Genevieve the desired results and left her at the bottom of the tribe for the last two tribal councils.
One misstep that Genevieve failed to account for was that word would get out. According to Sol in an exit interview, both Gabe Ortis and Andy Rueda made it clear to the rest of the tribe that the ringleader behind the move was Genevieve. She should have been aware that word getting out would elevate her threat level. Since then, tribemates Rachel LaMont, Teeny Chirichillo, and Andy have all commented on how big a threat Genevieve is.
Additionally, Genevieve’s decision to target Sol obliterated her core relationships. Genevieve, Teeny, and Sol were the remaining members of the Lavo tribe. Teeny, her former Lavo ally, has grown distant after forgiving her once previously for the blindside during the Kishan vote. The trust was broken since the Sol vote. Additionally, by eliminating Sol, Genevieve lost a reliable partner who could have had her back at least in the middle part of the game between 10 and 6 players.
The aftermath of Genevieve's decision
Since Sol’s elimination, Genevieve has struggled to regain her footing. At the final eight, she was once again excluded from the majority alliance, left vulnerable and with few options. While she survived the latest vote due to Kyle Ostwald losing immunity, it was clear that almost every player saw her as a threat. If Kyle had secured immunity, Genevieve would have been the next target.
As Reddit user skypadz_2112 put it:
"She destroyed her most important relationships and gained absolutely nothing besides a higher profile and a permanently larger target on her back. Congratulations."
This sentiment is echoed by many fans, who argue that Genevieve’s decision has turned her from a potential endgame contender into a player barely holding on.
Can Genevieve recover?
Despite what currently appears to be a huge gaffe, Genevieve remains in the game and survives another tribal council. She still has a slim chance to turn her game around.
However, she has not come close in any of the previous immunity challenges. Her options to forge any meaningful alliance also seem limited. It seems close to impossible for Teeny, Rachel, or Andy to work with her. Sam Phalen, also at the bottom, remains a viable ally but he would sacrifice Genevieve to stay in the game longer. Without these options, it would be close to impossible to see how she can make it to the final tribal council.
Her decision to vote out Sol will remain a defining moment of Survivor 47. Whether it defines her as a cautionary tale or an unlikely comeback story remains to be seen.
