A severe weather warning could impact filming of Survivor 52

Survivor 52 has begun filming, but could a Fijian weather warning cause chaos in the early days of the game?

According to multiple reports, the Survivor crew has officially set up to begin filming Survivor 52 as of a few days ago. But a current weather warning might impact the start of the game.

The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued a “strong wind warning” to the Mamanuca groups where Survivor films. According to the island’s official weather source, strong winds of up to 28 mph could move over the area within the next 24 to 48 hours. If this is set to fall on a challenge day, it could greatly affect our castaways’ performances and impact the outcome of one of the first immunity challenges.

Rough seas have also been predicted due to the wind speeds, which could lead to wet, cold castaways sitting around camp. For those who have yet to earn fire—if that’s still one of the disadvantages as the beginning of the game after all the “open” era changes entering the game—this could lead to severely cold nights.

We’ve only seen Survivor evacuate all castaways twice in Fiji due to weather—on Survivor: Millennials vs. Gen X and Survivor: David vs. Goliath. While this does not seem to be the same level of tropical cyclone that took place in those seasons, it is still heavy enough to impact the game or at least the comfort of our players, who are surely already uncomfortable as they adjust to the new environment and game.

Previously in the new era, there have been four seasons affected slightly by the weather. Players from Survivor 42 and Survivor 43 shared in post-game interviews that the rain was severe enough to make an impact on them at camp, though the edit of the show did not include anything obscene. In Survivor 46, however, we watched a big storm soak out castaways early in the game. And on Survivor 48 there were a few instances of heavy downpours and winds interrupting the show with Jeff Probst even getting soaked during a reward challenge.

We’ll see if Survivor 51 had any crazy weather when it premieres this fall, but we’ll have to wait a little longer—until 2027—to discover how this storm played out for our Survivor 52 players. Based on the reports, I think at most it could impact that drive of our players during a challenge or causes everyone to get to know each other a little better as they huddle together in the shelter to stay dry and warm.
