We're only four episodes into Survivor 50, and things are getting spicy among the fans thanks to a celebrity appearance by Survivor superfan and country music superstar, Zac Brown, in episode 4, "Knife to the Heart."
Zac Brown showed up out in Fiji to host a reward for the immunity-winning tribe, and instead of an episode of Survivor, it turned into the Zac Brown show for a big part of the episode. Survivor fans were not happy, to say the least. Survivor 50 episode 4 is the lowest-rated episode in the show's history on IMDb. The former Survivor players hated it just as much as the viewers did.
Despite the negative reaction to the episode, "Knife to the Heart" is actually the most-watched episode of Survivor 50 so far!
According to TV Series Finale, Nielsen reported a 5.220 rating, meaning more than 5.2 million viewers tuned in for the episode. That's up slightly from the Survivor 50 premiere, which scored a 5.063 rating.
In other words, the worst-rated episode in Survivor history was actually the most popular episode of Survivor this season. It's also the most popular episode of Survivor since the penultimate episode of Survivor 45 in the fall of 2023.
To really bury this point home, last week's episode is somehow the biggest episode of Survivor in basically two and a half years. And, the fans really didn't like it, overall. That's wild!

Survivor 50 giving so much time to Zac Brown was a huge missed opportunity
The worst that can come from this is that Jeff Probst and CBS see that a celebrity boosted the actual ratings that equate to ad revenue and start overdoing it. Like, I can't describe how bad of an idea that actually is!
From a narrative perspective, Brown could not have arrived at a worse time for the show. The gameplay in episode 4, including the first big blindside of the season, was an afterthought. We should have had a full episode of Christian Hubicki debating if he was really going to vote out Mike White, his alleged friend, on an epic 3-2-1 split vote. Like, that never happens in Survivor! Christian executed his strategy, but we barely got to see how that all came together because we spent like 30 minutes at the other camp or with Brown.
It seems like there's a lot more going on there with Mike and Christian than we knew, too. Based on Mike's exit interviews, it really seems like Christian was going to target him regardless. Whether that's revenge from David vs. Goliath, we don't know, but it would have been nice to see Christian talking more about that.
Survivor 50 is bringing back fans who stopped watching this show, and it's not because of Zac Brown. No offense to him, of course! He seems like a cool guy who likes shooting fish with a weapon that looks like it was designed by the supervillain Gru from Despicable Me. I just really reject this celebrity gimmick for Survivor 50 when the players are clearly bringing it when it comes to gameplay.
Instead of wasting time with celebrities, it would be much better if the show focused on that gameplay, on these players, and on their stories. They sacrificed everything to play this game again. We want to see them play, so let's see them play. It's as simple as that.
With all that said, it's so funny to me that the episode I enjoyed the least this season or multiple reasons is actually the most popular of the season. Hopefully, that means we're going to see more fans tuning in for the rest of the season. Honestly, these players deserve a big audience, and it looks like we're about to see the game really start to pick up as the season continues.
Stay tuned for more news about Survivor 50!
